Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • CPA designation preferred; candidates pursuing designation considered.
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience in a project-based environment.
  • Experience in a matrix organization or with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong knowledge of financial/cost accounting and project performance management.

Responsibilities

  • Support timely customer invoicing and collection of approved timesheets/expense reports.
  • Lead project budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting.
  • Develop financial models and forecasts to support decision making.
  • Monitor budget performance and advise on adjustments.
  • Support external reviews as SME on project performance and status.
  • Ensure compliance with funding regulations and contracts.

Venor is proud to partner with Natural Forces Solar in their search for a Divisional Controller to join their team in Dartmouth, NS. Natural Forces Solar, a subsidiary of Natural Forces, an independent power producer, is a leading turnkey Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor specializing in renewable energy projects across Atlantic Canada.

Natural Forces Solar is entering an exciting new phase of growth, transitioning from commercial and industrial solar projects to large-scale community and long-term utility solar developments, creating a unique opportunity to help build the financial foundation of a rapidly expanding business. For professionals who enjoy influencing strategy and making a lasting impact, there has never been a more exciting time to join the team. The Natural Forces Divisional Controller will be an integral member of the Solar Leadership team and the Finance team, working cross-functionally to support the Finance and Project teams. Their key tasks include monitoring project performance, reporting, and coordinating with project teams to ensure financial goals are met throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
Project Activities
  • Support the preparation and delivery of timely customer invoicing.
  • Manage the collection and review of approved timesheets and expense reports to support project tracking and reporting.
Project Analysis
  • Prepare commercial analyses in support of the Operations Team.
  • Conduct detailed financial analyses to assess funding requirements, project financial viability, and potential risks.
  • Collaborate during Leadership team decision-making to highlight the impacts of operational decisions on the project’s financial outlook.
  • Develop financial models and forecasts to support informed decision-making.
Project Financial Reporting
  • Lead the preparation of project budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting.
  • Monitor budget performance and provide recommendations for adjustments as required.
  • Prepare Natural Forces Solar’s overall cash flow forecast by managing and consolidating inputs from various departments.
  • Complete detailed percentage-of-completion and deferred revenue schedules aligned with project performance reporting requirements.
  • Support annual external review engagements as a subject matter expert on Natural Forces Solar’s project performance and status.
Continuous Improvement
  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of solutions to enhance project performance reporting requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for process and system improvements that integrate with the broader Finance team’s methodologies to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
Contractual Compliance
  • Ensure project funding activities comply with relevant regulations, standards, and organizational policies.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on funding status, financial performance, and project progress to key stakeholders.
  • Support compliance requirements related to operating agreements, including Power Purchase Agreements and service contracts.
  • Administer security clearances for applicable projects.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • CPA designation is preferred; candidates actively pursuing their designation and nearing completion will also be considered.
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a project-based or project accounting environment.
  • Experience working in a matrix organization or with cross-functional teams through dotted-line reporting relationships.
  • Technical Skills Strong knowledge of financial accounting, cost accounting, and project performance management, with an understanding of project management principles and practices.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial and operational information, identify key insights, and develop practical solutions.
  • Experience preparing revenue recognition schedules, financial reports, and supporting documentation for accounting reviews, audits, and contractual reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems and advanced skills in Microsoft Excel or similar financial tools.
  • Core Competencies Strong accountability and ownership with the ability to manage responsibilities independently and deliver results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to stakeholders, investors, and project teams.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills with the ability to assess challenges and recommend effective solutions.
