Job summary

Walker Industries seeks a Divisional Controller to lead accounting and reporting for the Environmental Division from Niagara Falls, with weekly travel to Niagara Falls Office. You will drive ASPE compliance, budgeting, forecasting, and KPI-based performance analysis.

You will manage a finance team, deliver monthly statements, prepare year-end work papers, and partner with executives to improve financial results. CPA and extensive accounting experience required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Lead accounting and reporting for the Environmental Division.

  • Oversee general and subsidiary ledgers to ensure data integrity.

About the Job

Are you a strategic finance leader who thrives on turning financial data into meaningful business insights? We're looking for an experienced Divisional Controller to join our leadership team in Niagara Falls. Reporting directly to the Vice-President, Finance, you will play a key role in providing accurate, timely financial reporting and analysis that supports executive decision-making across the organization. You'll lead the Division's accounting and reporting functions, ensuring compliance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE), while partnering closely with operational leaders to drive financial performance and continuous improvement. In this highly visible leadership role, you'll also work closely with the Executive Vice-President, Environmental, providing financial guidance and support to senior management and divisional operations. This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative CPA who enjoys balancing technical accounting expertise with strategic business partnership.

Based out of Niagara Falls or Oakville with weekly travel to Niagara Falls Office.

Salary: $130,000 to $170,000 based on experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the financial accounting and reporting functions for the Environmental Division, ensuring that effective controls are in place for the accuracy, reasonableness, and completeness of the financial results through a detailed understanding and ownership of the accounting processes and core operational systems;
  • Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for private enterprises (“ASPE”) and other relevant regulations;
  • Provide accurate and timely financial information and variance analysis to senior management, executives, and other stakeholders;
  • Create ad hoc reporting to ensure the accuracy of financial information and to detail areas of concern for senior management review;
  • Oversee the maintenance of all general and subsidiary ledger accounts to ensure the integrity of financial information gathered and reported;
  • Support the business unit by advising on accounting and finance issues related to current matters and future opportunities and provide support to cross-functional teams, as appropriate;
  • Coordinate and assist in the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets, planning processes, and forecasting to help senior management analyze anticipated financial results;
  • Prepare year-end working paper files and supporting documentation for the annual audited financial statements and corporate tax returns;
  • Develop a team through active coaching and mentoring, setting objectives, and developing talent to maintain and enhance competency levels. Identify future training requirements and design goals to increase performance;
  • Provide leadership, support, and guidance to Finance staff and indirectly operational staff, ensuring that effective controls are maintained within the ERP system;
  • Continuously involved with KPI development and reporting, including continuous financial monitoring to support data-driven decision-making;
  • Attend operating and financial review meetings to maintain current business knowledge and provide financial analysis as required;
  • Provide functional guidance and oversight to staff on controllership issues; and
  • Ensure that Direct Reports and their staff workloads are done accurately and efficiently and comply with policies, procedures, and regulations as well as best working practices.

Here’s What You Need

  • University Degree (Commerce, Business Administration or equivalent) and a CPA designation.
  • Minimum seven to ten years of accounting / supervisory experience.
  • Exceptional initiative and judgment to effectively organize, prioritize, and supervise daily tasks with a high level of proficiency, courtesy, tact, and diplomacy when dealing with others.
  • Advanced attention to detail with an unwavering commitment to producing accurate and thorough work and maintaining accurate records.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, analyze and resolve complex problems.
  • Advanced numerical skills to interpret and analyze financial data, produce accurate work, and oversee the accurate work of others.
  • Excellent ability to communicate technical information to colleagues in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting guidelines and principles.
  • Demonstrated management skills with the ability to supervise the workload of others and provide constructive feedback.
  • Organized and methodical with a structured workflow and the ability to follow specific procedures.
  • Proficient in computer software skills to track data and produce documents and reports as required.
  • Full understanding of quality standards relative to accounting and accurate reporting of financial information.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and take discretionary action as required.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to compose clear documents, edit, and proofread as necessary.
  • Professional manner, tact, diplomacy, and discretion when dealing with colleagues and associates, and other stakeholders.
  • Proactive with the ability to anticipate and initiate action to meet needs.
  • Adaptable with the ability to work effectively with diverse personalities and styles.
