Job summary

Van Kam Freightways Ltd. in Kelowna is seeking a Dispatcher to coordinate daily freight movements and routes. You will direct and support a driving team, work with the dock staff, and use the Auto-Route system to optimize deliveries.

The role requires strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with knowledge of DOT rules. This 3-month contract offers benefits and growth potential as the company continues its 78-year journey in the LTL space.

Qualifications

  • Previous dispatch, transportation, logistics, or LTL experience is asset.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to make timely decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to coordinate drivers and work collaboratively with dock and terminal teams.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate the daily driving team to meet or exceed operational and service goals.
  • Utilize the Auto-Route system to plan and manage efficient delivery routes.
  • Maximize route and driver efficiency while minimizing unnecessary overtime.
  • Coordinate drivers for afternoon duties and other operational requirements.
  • Work closely with the dock team to support efficient freight movement and daily delivery requirements.
  • Set up and maintain postal codes, consignee information, and customer delivery details within the Auto-Route system.
  • Ensure applicable notes are entered for freight that is not delivered within the scheduled timeframe.
  • Maintain customer delivery profiles with relevant notes and instructions for drivers.
  • Minimize the use of hired cartage while maintaining service requirements.
  • Ensure applicable charges, including tailgate, appointment, redelivery, and flat-deck charges, are accurately captured.
  • Process storage and shortage bills as required.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Dispatch & Route Coordination
  • Direct and coordinate the daily driving team to meet or exceed operational and service goals.

Appointments & Customer Service
  • Keep customers informed of appointment details, delivery status, and any changes or delays.
  • Respond to incoming phone calls and customer inquiries as needed.
  • Request and coordinate re-consignments, redeliveries, flat-deck services, and other special delivery requirements, ensuring appropriate approvals are received.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Previous dispatch, transportation, logistics, or LTL experience is considered an asset.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to make timely decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate drivers and work collaboratively with dock and terminal teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate information and documentation.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, staffing requirements, and operational needs.
  • Experience with transportation management, dispatch, or routing systems is considered an asset.
  • Comfortable learning and working with internal computer systems and technology.
