Reporting to the Director of Health & Safety, the Disability Specialist will collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization to achieve and sustain operational excellence in Health and Wellness. This position is based in Calgary, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities

Claims Management (WCB)

  • Oversee and manage workplace injury claims, ensuring timely and accurate reporting to WCB.
  • Act as the primary liaison between employees, WCB, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders(supervisors and management at DHC).
  • Review claim documentation, medical reports, and WCB correspondence to assess eligibility and claim status.
  • Work proactively to mitigate claim costs by facilitating early intervention strategies.
  • Track claim progress and ensure compliance with WCB policies, regulations, and reporting deadlines.
  • Assist employees with WCB claim submissions, appeals, and documentation requirements.


STD & LTD Claim Support (Non-Work-Related Claims)

  • Assist employees in initiating STD and LTD claims by providing guidance on documentation requirements and claim submission processes.
  • Liaise with insurance providers, medical professionals, and internal stakeholders to facilitate timely claim approvals.
  • Monitor claim status, ensuring accurate and prompt communication between employees and insurance carriers.
  • Support employees through the medical leave process, including return-to-work planning and accommodation discussions.
  • Educate employees and managers on STD/LTD policies, eligibility criteria, and benefit entitlements.


Return-to-Work (RTW) Coordination

  • Develop and implement effective RTW plans in collaboration with employees, managers, payroll, union and WCB case workers.
  • Work closely with medical professionals or 3rd party providers to assess restrictions and accommodations.
  • Identify suitable modified or alternative work duties for injured employees.
  • Monitor the progress of employees returning to work and adjust RTW plans as needed.
  • Educate managers and employees on RTW policies, expectations, and best practices.


Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure all disability claims and RTW processes align with WCB/WSIB/WSBC legislation, company policies, and health & safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of claims, case management activities, and RTW plans.
  • Prepare reports on claim trends, lost time, and RTW success rates for leadership.
  • Conduct internal audits of claims management practices to ensure compliance.


Risk Management & Prevention

  • Collaborate with the Health & Safety teams to identify trends and reduce workplace injuries.
  • Recommend improvements to workplace safety policies based on claim analysis.
  • Participate in incident investigations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide guidance and support to employees throughout the claims and RTW process.
  • Deliver training sessions on injury prevention, claims management, and RTW best practices.


Experience

  • Education in HR, Occupational Health & Safety, Disability Management, or related field. CDMP or CRTWC designation is an asset.
  • 5+years in disability claims management, WCB claims, and RTW coordination, preferably in manufacturing or aerospace. Strong background in case management and workplace accommodation.
  • Expertise in WCB legislation, occupational health and safety regulations, and injury prevention strategies in a safety-sensitive environment.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities. Proficient in claims management systems, MS Office, and HRIS platforms. Excellent organization and attention to detail in managing multiple claims and RTW programs.


Skills

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Accurate and strong data analysis skills specific to digital platforms (HRIS and Incident Reporting Platforms)
  • Strong time management, written/verbal communication, and digital technology skills
  • Proven ability to assist with the design and rollout of internal programs
