Job summary

National Bank seeks a Director, Portfolio Management in Commercial Banking to lead underwriting professionals and drive disciplined credit execution in Abbotsford with collaboration across Market Lead and Credit Risk teams.

Role focuses on underwriting decisions, credit quality, and structured financing solutions for commercial clients, reporting to AVP & Manager, Commercial Portfolio Management in the Fraser Valley region.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, economics, or related field
  • Significant experience in commercial banking
  • Strong financial analysis, credit structuring and risk assessment

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of underwriting professionals with coaching and development opportunities
  • Oversee analysis and structuring of commercial credit transactions for current and prospective clients
  • Review credit applications to ensure quality of financial analysis and risk mitigation
  • Support complex transactions and credit applications as needed
  • Collaborate with Market Lead, Commercial Account Managers, and Credit Risk Management to drive portfolio growth
  • Monitor loan portfolio to ensure adherence to internal parameters and credit quality

You play a central role in guiding underwriting decisions, strengthening credit quality, and supporting commercial partners with well-structured financing solutions. Your ability to combine judgment, rigor, and collaboration helps ensure positive outcomes for clients, teams, and theBank.

  • Lead a team of underwriting specialists by providing coaching, feedback and development opportunities that enhance their expertise.
  • Oversee the analysis and structuring of commercial credit transactions for current and prospective clients, ensuring that recommendations are well-supported and in line with risk appetite.
  • Review credit applications to ensure the quality of financial analysis, risk identification and proposed mitigation measures.
  • Contribute to complex transactions by supportingtheirdealstructuring and preparing, when required, credit applications.
  • Collaborate withthe Market Lead,Commercial Account Managers,and Credit Risk Management teams to support portfolio growth and sound decision-making.
  • Monitor the loan portfolio to ensure continued adherence to internal parameters and credit quality expectations.
Your team:

The Commercial Banking sector brings together professionals who support commercial clients through tailored financial solutions and strong advisory expertise. You work withinan ecosystem of specialists who collaborate closely to meet client needs and drive responsible growth.

You will lead a team of four underwriting professionals who report directly to you. In this role, you will work closely with your team, the Market Lead, Sales Leader, Commercial Account Managers, and other internal partners to support disciplined credit execution, strong portfolio management, and client-focused solutions. This position reports directly to the AVP & Manager, Commercial Portfolio Management covering the Fraser Valley district.

Requirements:
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, economics, or a related field, combined with significant experience in commercial banking
  • Demonstrate extensive experience in commercial credit underwriting and portfolio management
  • Have proven experience leading, developing, and supporting high-performing underwriting teams
  • Show strong expertise in financial analysis, credit structuring, and risk assessment
  • Possess experience reviewing and approving complex credit transactions
  • Be comfortable working closely with multiple stakeholders in a matrix environment
