Your Opportunity


The Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) at Temerty Medicine is the largest academic department of family medicine in the world, and home to the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre in Family Medicine and Primary Care. With over 2200 faculty members and hundreds of learners as well as a staff complement of 55, DFCM is a powerhouse department helping to chart the future of primary care, from office-based family practice to emergency medicine, palliative care, care of the elderly, mental health, Indigenous health and more.


As Director, Planning and Operations, you will have a dual reporting relationship to the Office of the CAO, for oversight of administrative planning and operations, and a functional reporting relationship to the Chair, DFCM, for strategic academic and research priorities. You will provide leadership and oversight across the DFCM portfolio through the effective management of all administrative functions, including finance (including operating funds and research accounts), human resources, project management, and space management.

You will navigate and influence a large and diverse group of stakeholders, including faculty members, staff, senior leadership, and external partners, to build consensus and mobilize support for major initiatives. Your record of building and mentoring high-performing teams, and your proven ability to navigate and influence within complex organizational structures will help us advance our priorities and support and promote our academic mission.


Qualifications

  • University Degree in business administration, finance and/or human resources management, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive, senior leadership experience in operations, finance, or administration working in a University or academic hospital setting
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and fund management
  • Significant people leadership experience, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Demonstrated experience leading large, complex projects
  • Experience managing and overseeing complex administrative processes
  • Experience scoping and managing projects and leading successful change
  • Experience in strategic planning, including development and implementation
  • Advanced proficiency with Office 365 and demonstrated working knowledge of financial and HR information systems
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and collegial manner, with an appreciation for the challenges and opportunities of working within a large, decentralized institution
  • Ability to train, coach, and motivate staff to work collaboratively toward the goals of the office
  • Superior presentation, oral, and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated strategic, analytical, organization and planning skills
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of initiative and resourcefulness, including the ability to manage deadlines and prioritize work
  • Ability to solve problems in a strategic and tactical manner; strong conflict management skills
  • Strong political acuity and sound judgement
  • Proven commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity

Assets

  • CA/CMA/CGA designation
  • Working knowledge of policies and procedures of University of Toronto and their application within the Faculty of Medicine
  • Experience and knowledge of higher education processes
  • Experience and knowledge of research processes in the Ontario university environment
