Job summary

Position: Director, Payroll
Location: Markham, ON (Hybrid - 3 days onsite)
Salary: $150,000 + 15% Bonus

Our client, a leading healthcare organization, is seeking a strategic Director, Payroll to lead the delivery, transformation, and continuous improvement of payroll operations across a large, complex organization.

This newly created leadership role is ideal for an experienced payroll professional who has successfully led payroll functions within a large, multi-site, unionized environment. You'll provide strategic direction while overseeing payroll operations, driving process improvements, and leading a high-performing team through growth and transformation.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Lead the organization's payroll strategy, operations, and governance across multiple provinces.
  • Oversee complex, full-cycle payroll operations for unionized and non-unionized employees.
  • Drive payroll transformation, process improvements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll legislation, collective agreements, and internal controls.
  • Partner with HR, Finance, Operations, and Labour Relations to support business objectives.
  • Leverage Workday and other technologies to enhance payroll processes, reporting, and operational efficiency.
  • Monitor payroll metrics and KPIs to drive performance and improve service delivery.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing payroll team while fostering a collaborative and service-focused culture.
What We're Looking For
  • 10+ years of progressive payroll experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Proven experience leading payroll operations within a large, complex, multi-site organization.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, compliance, and payroll governance.
  • Experience supporting unionized environments and understanding the impact of collective bargaining agreements on payroll.
  • Experience leading payroll transformation, process improvement, and change management initiatives.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience with Workday Payroll is considered a strong asset.
  • PCP or PLP designation is considered an asset.
