Reporting to the Hotel Manager, the Director of Engineering provides a strategic direction for key projects that impact hotel facilities as well as managing the Engineering department in the day-to-day operations at the highest levels of safety, security, compliance, and energy conservation, while enhancing guest satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clear direction of all engineering and maintenance activities and KPIs that include expectation of service standards, delivery of key projects, and promotion of best practices.
  • Build and manage a 10-year Capital plan with focus on long-term infrastructure and ROI projects.
  • Build relationships with external partners, vendors, and stakeholders to advance engineering initiatives and expand organizational capabilities.
  • Plan, organize, and execute all on-property projects with contractors. Be the lead contact for all contractors and ensure all our safety protocols are being met and projects stay on time and on budget.
  • Manage and grow relationships with ownership projects and finance teams.
  • Manage the budget and ensure resources are allocated effectively to maximize results and minimize inefficiency and disruption to guests.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in the industry, proactively integrating relevant advancements into engineering practices.
  • Oversee the performance standards of daily property checks, conduct lift emergency release procedures, and equipment repairs that impact safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with Housekeeping, Front Desk, and other departments to ensure seamless communication and prioritization of maintenance activities, especially in guest rooms and public areas.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations through communication with government agencies.
  • Develop and enforce safety systems for guests and team members.
  • Introduce environmentally friendly systems and equipment to enhance sustainability.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the team by setting clear objectives, KPIs, and performance expectations.
  • Foster a culture of high standards, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and address any disciplinary matters.

Qualifications and Key Requirements

  • A degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in Engineering leadership roles, ideally within the hospitality industry.
  • Proven experience managing large teams and driving engineering strategies to improve operational experience, preferably in a union environment.
  • Strong understanding of building management, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and other mechanical services essential to hotel operations.
  • Excellent problem-solving and crisis management skills, especially in high-pressure situations.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, projects, payroll, and basic accounting.
  • Proficiency with relevant engineering software and building management systems.
  • Excellent and effective communication skills and a track record of leading high-performance teams.
  • Commitment to delivering outstanding customer service.

It would be advantageous in this position for you to demonstrate the following capabilities and distinctions:

  • Advanced knowledge of sustainable and energy-saving practices.
  • First Aid certification and qualification in a specialized engineering field.
