Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of progressive Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, or Building Operations experience.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of Engineering leadership or management in a hotel, resort, luxury hospitality, or large complex property environment.
  • Hospitality engineering experience in luxury hotel or resort environments is strongly preferred.
  • Engineering degree, diploma, or certification in Mechanical, Electrical, Building Systems, or Facilities Management is preferred.
  • Power Engineering certification is a strong asset; boiler plant knowledge is beneficial.

Job Description

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Director, Engineering to join our Engineering leadership team.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Assistant Director, Engineering will support the strategic and day-to-day leadership of the Engineering & Maintenance Department. This role is responsible for assisting with the planning, coordination, execution, and continuous improvement of maintenance operations across the hotel, including guest rooms, public areas, food and beverage outlets, kitchens, meeting spaces, spa, pools, back-of-house areas, mechanical rooms, plant operations, and critical building systems.

The successful candidate must bring strong hospitality engineering experience, proven management capability, and advanced technical understanding of MEP systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, heating systems, domestic hot water, fire/life safety, controls, and building automation systems.

This is a hands-on leadership role for a technically strong, service-driven leader who can manage people, systems, contractors, budgets, audits, emergencies, and competing priorities in a 24/7 luxury hotel environment.

Competitive Salary:

$107,000-$110,000 gross annually, based on previous experience & education

Job Duties Include
  • Support the Director of Engineering in the strategic and day-to-day leadership of the Engineering & Maintenance Department, providing operational leadership in their absence while ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a 24/7 luxury resort.
  • Lead, coach, schedule, and develop a diverse team of skilled trades and maintenance professionals, overseeing daily operations, responding to guest and operational maintenance requests, and fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and exceptional service.
  • Oversee comprehensive preventive maintenance programs and provide technical leadership for all major building systems, including HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, plumbing, electrical distribution, fire/life safety, building automation, and other critical mechanical infrastructure to maximize system reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Manage capital projects, renovations, asset lifecycle planning, contractor performance, purchasing, inventory, and departmental budgets while driving cost-effective maintenance practices, energy conservation initiatives, and long-term infrastructure improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, environmental, fire, building code, and brand standards by leading audits, maintaining engineering documentation, supporting regulatory inspections, and promoting best practices in risk management and workplace safety.
  • Partner closely with operational departments across the hotel to deliver exceptional guest experiences, respond to emergency situations and critical system failures, support business continuity, and continuously improve maintenance processes, operational performance, and colleague engagement.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, or Building Operations experience.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of Engineering leadership or management experience in a hotel, resort, luxury hospitality, or large complex property environment.
  • Hospitality Engineering experience is required. Luxury hotel, resort, heritage property, or large full-service hotel experience is strongly preferred.
  • Engineering degree, diploma, or certification in Mechanical, Electrical, Building Systems, Facilities Management, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Valid Journeyperson / Red Seal trade certification in a relevant trade such as Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC/Refrigeration, Millwright, or related discipline will be considered.
  • Power Engineering certification is a strong asset; ability to understand and support boiler plant operations is required.
  • Strong technical understanding of MEP systems, including HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, boilers, heating systems, pumps, motors, domestic hot water, controls, BMS/BAS, fire/life safety, and building infrastructure.
  • Proven ability to lead planning, scheduling, coordination, preventive maintenance, project execution, contractor management, and operational follow-up.
  • Experience managing Engineering budgets, capital projects, purchasing, inventory, service contracts, and cost-control initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of safety requirements, building codes, fire/life safety standards, WHMIS, OH&S practices, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is a strong asset.
  • Strong leadership, communication, coaching, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex operational issues and coordinate effective solutions.
  • Computer literacy required, including Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Experience with CMMS, BMS/BAS, energy management systems, work order platforms, purchasing systems, and hotel operating systems is an asset.
  • Highly organized, accountable, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities without losing follow-through.
  • Must be safety-conscious and committed to maintaining a safe work environment for guests, colleagues, contractors, and visitors.
  • Must demonstrate professional presence, sound judgment, and a guest-first approach.
