Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical, electrical, industrial or chemical engineering.
  • P.Eng preferred; additional education/certifications in project management and reliability or asset management, Six Sigma, and lean manufacturing.
  • Significant experience (10+ years) in engineering leadership and continuous improvement with strong financial acumen.
  • Experience in Food Manufacturing and/or Protein processing is considered an asset.

This role is home-office based with regular travel to operations across Canada. Preference will be given to candidates located in Alberta, Manitoba, or the Greater Toronto Area due to proximity to key operating locations.

About This Opportunity:

The Director of Engineering is accountable for capital strategy, engineering execution, technical innovation, and continuous improvement across Canada Packers' supply chain. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Supply Chain, this role ensures capital investments and engineering capabilities deliver capacity, efficiency, safety, quality, and reliability, while enabling the business to scale and operate in a consistent, disciplined manner.
The role owns the capital appropriations budget, leads the strategic capital development portfolio, and is responsible for the on-time, on-scope, on-budget delivery of capital projects. In parallel, the role develops and governs a technical innovation pipeline, focused on engineering and processing technologies that can materially improve and transform operations.

Responsibilities:
1. Engineering Strategy, Capital Governance & Program Leadership

Provide leadership for engineering strategy and capital governance across the supply chain.

Own the capital appropriations budget, including prioritization, sequencing, and governance of all capital investments.

Lead the integrated capital program, balancing tactical and strategic investments to build Capacity and throughput, Operational efficiency, Safety and quality performance, Asset reliability and sustainability.

Ensure capital investments are clearly linked to operational needs and deliver measurable business outcomes.

2. Strategic Capital Development & Execution

Lead the strategic capital development portfolio, maintaining a rolling pipeline of tactical and strategic projects.

Own front-end project development, including feasibility, scope definition, cost estimating, and business case development.

Lead capital execution through disciplined project management practices, ensuring delivery on time, on scope, and on budget.

Drive excellence in commissioning, validation, and start-up (CVS), ensuring safe start-up, rapid stabilization, and a seamless handover to Operations.

Apply hybrid and agile delivery approaches where appropriate, especially for complex or novel initiatives.

3. Technical Innovation & Disruptive Engineering Technologies

Develop and lead a technical innovation pipeline focused on engineering, process, and equipment innovation.

Identify, evaluate, pilot, and scale technologies that improve processing efficiency, automation, yield, quality, and asset utilization.

Partner with equipment suppliers, technology firms, research organizations, and industry groups to assess emerging solutions.

Ensure innovation initiatives are operationally grounded, value-focused, and scalable.

4. External Partnerships & Commercial Management

Own strategic relationships with engineering firms, equipment manufacturers, and technology providers.

Lead vendor selection and commercial negotiations, including cost, scope, and delivery terms.

Ensure external partners meet expectations for performance, safety, quality, and compliance.

Leverage external partnerships to accelerate execution and innovation where appropriate.

5. Leadership & Engineering Capability Development

Lead and develop a high-performing engineering and CI organization.

Establish clear roles, expectations, and development pathways for Project Engineers and CI leaders.

Build technical depth, leadership capability, and succession plans.

Foster a culture of accountability, safety, learning, and execution discipline.

Skills & Experience:

Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical, electrical, industrial or chemical engineering; P.Eng preferred.

Additional education and/or certification in project management and reliability or asset management, Six Sigma methodology, and lean manufacturing.

Significant experience (10+ years) in engineering leadership and continuous improvement with a strong financial and business acumen.

Experience in Food Manufacturing and/or Protein processing is considered an asset.

The expected annual compensation for this role is $143,000 - $214,000 per year. This includes base salary and eligibility for our annual incentive program. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and internal equity.
