Senior Member of the Canadian Legal Team

This individual will provide full legal advice and support to multiple business and enablement units across the Canadian operations. Handles moderate to highly complex legal matters and collaborates effectively with businesses as needed to achieve business goals and initiatives.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide day-to-day legal research, counsel, and guidance on legal and compliance issues, including conducting training presentations for business units as necessary.
  2. Develop, revise, and maintain insurance policy forms and endorsements for all enterprise product lines.
  3. Prepare internal corporate policies and procedures documentation, review and draft contracts and legal documents such as NDAs and vendor agreements.
  4. Offer counsel on coverage interpretations to assist Underwriting and Claims with issues raised by external partners or clients, and assist with litigation management.
  5. Monitor, evaluate, and advise business areas on federal and provincial/territorial legislative and regulatory activity and industry developments to ensure compliance.
  6. Review and approve marketing materials and risk management presentations and articles, ensuring they accurately reflect product content and comply with all applicable insurance laws. Interface with marketing, compliance, legal, and communications departments as appropriate.
  7. Support high-priority legal and compliance initiatives, including knowledge management, workflow enhancements, and legal expense management.
  8. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  1. In-depth knowledge of the insurance business, including product development, underwriting, claims, legal, and regulatory aspects.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  3. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  4. Excellent organizational skills.
  5. Effective interpersonal, consultative, and communication skills to interact with business units and external contacts.
  6. Ability to exercise independent judgment and handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  7. Proactive mindset with a long-term view to achieve strategic business results.
  8. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and other relevant software systems.

Education & Experience

  1. Qualified lawyer in good standing with 10+ years of post-qualification experience (LL.B or JD). In-house experience is preferred.
  2. Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
