About the role

Position: Director, Finance

Position Type: Full-time, permanent

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Start Date: As soon as possible

Location: Remote from home, resident in Canada

The Director, Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the organization, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and providing strategic financial insights to support the organization’s mission and goals. This role involves managing day-to-day accounting operations, preparing financial statements, leading grant and application processes, and driving system migrations and enhancements. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in non-profit finance, experience with business analytics, and proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Power Platform, and PowerBI.

This position is open only to residents of Canada who are eligible to work in Canada.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Financial operations oversight: Manage daily accounting tasks including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and general ledger. Ensure accuracy and timeliness. Track contracts, grants, and agreements in master lists for easy reference.
  2. Compliance and regulatory oversight: Ensure adherence to federal, provincial, and local regulations, as well as organizational policies. Maintain financial transparency and integrity.
  3. Financial reporting and analysis: Prepare and present financial statements and reconciliations monthly, quarterly, and annually. Lead the audit process with the CFO.
  4. Grant writing and management: Lead grant application submissions and manage financial reporting and compliance for grants and contracts.
  5. Non-profit financial expertise: Apply sector-specific financial management practices to improve reporting, budgeting, and forecasting. Ensure alignment with non-profit sector needs.
  6. Business analytics: Use analytics to support strategic decisions, analyze financial data, and provide insights and recommendations.
  7. System migration and integration: Lead migration from legacy systems to QuickBooks Online, ensuring seamless integration with other software.
  8. Technology proficiency: Use Power Platform and PowerBI to create dashboards, reports, and workflows for enhanced financial oversight.
  9. Budgeting and forecasting: Assist with organizational budgeting, provide forecasts, and adjust plans based on funding and expense changes.
  10. Team leadership and development: Supervise finance staff, set goals, provide coaching, and support professional growth.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field; Master’s degree or CPA preferred.
  • 7-10 years of progressive finance experience, including 1-3 years in a leadership role in non-profit.
  • Extensive QuickBooks Online experience, including migrations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Teams, SharePoint, Planner).
  • Knowledge of Power Platform and PowerBI is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of non-profit financial management, grant writing, and reporting.
  • Experience in business analytics and strategic financial planning.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of explaining complex financial info to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

Includes a salary of $115,000/year, contributions to group RRSP, health/dental/long-term disability/life insurance, Employee Assistance Program, flexible work location (within Canada), and paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave.
