SHIFT:35 hours per week

About the Position:

Reporting to the Senior Director, Finance, the Director, Finance supports major initiatives in finance, accounting, investments and treasury and provides leadership to the team on the daily operations of the department. This role will be an active contributor to setting strategy, determining priorities and liaising with other departments within the organization and with vendors. The Director, Finance will proactively monitor the outputs of the team, ensuring that all compliance and reporting deadlines are met.

This position will cover the Senior Director, Finance and Controller during periods of absence.

Some specific duties:

Financial & Accounting (55%):

  • Ensures timely and accurate financial reporting and compliance deliverables.
  • Drives key automation projects such as process automation and KPI dashboarding using existing and new tools.
  • Reviews or prepares analysis and memorandums on technical accounting and indirect tax matters.
  • Leads the FP&A team in the annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes and report development.
  • Collaborates with the Senior Director, Finance and CFO to ensure annual core budget assumptions align with five-year financial planning scenarios.
  • Develops and monitors the annual budget for the finance department.
  • Actively contributes to the Finance Department Risk Register, including identification of key financial risks and ongoing mitigation efforts.
  • Acts as the key liaison for complex issues on the annual external audit and overseeing the interim and year-end audit preparation.
  • Understands, monitors and actively recommends amendments to the key internal controls.

Management & Leadership (40%):

  • Oversees hiring, onboarding, performance management, development, and recognition of direct reports, including but not limited to:
    • Ensuring their understanding of and work is in alignment with the BC SPCA core values.
    • Ensuring they are provided with and complete the designated onboarding roadmap within the time period noted.
    • Providing active coaching and mentorship to ensure objectives and goals are met, celebrating individual and team successes.
    • Conducting regular SMART goal setting and performance reviews.
    • Leading team-building efforts.
    • Ensuring coverage of team members’ duties during periods of absence as required.
  • Provides input on the annual finance unit roadmap and supports implementation of key organizational priority projects.
  • Supports a culture of innovation, teamwork and embracing change.
  • Models exceptional standards of ethics, professionalism and internal and external customer service standards.
  • Develops anannual planfor the team of direct reports, based on the strategic plan, the Finance team’s annual roadmap and other key metrics, benchmarks and industry best practices that support continuously improved processes and reporting.
  • Supports the development of and compliance with key financial policies and standard operating procedures
  • Builds supportive and trusting relationships across all functions of the organization to ensure financial procedures are relevant, clear and implemented effectively andto ensure the finance function is providing value-added support to the organization.
  • Providesexpertise and contributes to the strategic direction of the financial reporting function,including insight into data analysis of key metrics, benchmarks and strategy.
    • Uses analytics and critical thinking to review metrics consistently and adjust tactics and performance accordingly.
  • Clearly communicates and endorses organizational decisions once made.
  • Prioritizes training related to meeting leadership expectations.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to BC SPCA values, work-life balance, and principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation.
  • Contributes to a culture of innovation, teamwork, agility and idea generation.
  • Demonstrates behaviors supporting workplace health, safety and wellness and support for volunteerism within the finance team and on any cross-functional working groups.
  • Embraces data, technology and automation to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the finance function.

Investing & Treasury(5%):

  • Collaborates on monitoring of the cash flow forecasts and supports implementation of investment management decision making.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications you need to have:

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) required plus a minimum of 10 years’ experience in finance, accounting and/or investments, including a minimum of three (3) years in a Senior Manager or Controller role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer. Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to the following:
    • Understanding of restricted fund accounting and CRA reporting requirements for non-profits (T3010).
    • Foundational understanding of financial risk management and experience identifying, documenting and mitigating financial risks.
    • Experience supporting multiple, complex projects concurrently using project management best practices.
  • Emotionally intelligent leader with a focus on strengths-based coaching.
  • Strategic and creative thinker with a passion for financial optimization.
  • Self-starter who enjoys proactively generating, evaluating and implementing new ideas and does independent research, cost/benefit and risk analysis before making recommendations.
  • Comfort with big-picture thinking balanced with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability optimizing the talents of a diverse team and ranking and communicating how to navigate competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with internal and external parties at all levels and from diverse backgrounds in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Ability to successfully address and resolve conflict.
  • High level of comfort with change and experience leading a team using best practice change management frameworks.
  • Embraces data, technology and automation to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the finance function.
  • Demonstrates a foundational level of investing knowledge (investment classes, standard benchmarks, asset mix).
  • Exceptional analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of concepts of equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation.
  • Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission, values and strategic directions of the BC SPCA.
