Position Overview

The Director, Accounting provides financial leadership across the company's general accounting function, with ownership of operating expenses, capital expenditures, internal payroll and benefits costs, and the related balance sheet accounts — including fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, and lease obligations. Beyond these core functional areas, this role also oversees the accounting for two distinct business units: the CCFS lending business and the Open Health trust, each with its own reporting requirements. This role is critical to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information within a complex, multi‑entity organization while strengthening processes, systems, controls, and team structure. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with hands‑on leadership, a people‑first mindset, and a proven ability to drive process improvement and manage teams across multiple locations. Success requires delivering timely and accurate results under tight deadlines and competing priorities while serving as a genuine team player and collaborative partner across the finance organization. This position reports to an operationally engaged VP, Accounting.

Core Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Management
  • Direct all general accounting functions encompassing operating expenses, capital expenditures, internal payroll and benefits costs, and related balance sheet accounts (fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, leases); additionally oversee accounting for two distinct business lines — the CCFS lending business and the Open Health trust — each requiring standalone reporting

  • Review account reconciliations to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information; improve accounting reconciliation workflows, reporting flows, and close timelines across a complex, multi‑entity organization

  • Maintain an effective internal control environment across all areas of responsibility; lead control documentation assessment and remediation efforts to strengthen processes, systems, and controls within a complex, multi‑entity structure

Financial Analysis & Reporting
  • Deliver comprehensive monthly and quarterly financial reports with detailed variance analysis comparing actual results to budgets, forecasts, and prior‑period performance

  • Provide strategic insights and actionable recommendations to senior management based on financial trends and variances

Compliance & Audit Management
  • Support the annual 401(k) audit process, including workpaper preparation, coordination with plan auditors, and execution of quarterly internal compliance reviews

  • Support tax‑related audits by preparing and providing comprehensive documentation to the corporate tax team

  • Manage timely submission of regulatory compliance filings, including Census, Department of Labor, and Canadian Statistics Surveys

  • Support the external financial statement audit by providing timely documentation, workpapers, and responses to auditor requests for all areas within scope of this role

Cross‑Functional Leadership
  • Foster strong collaboration across HR, Payroll, and Accounting teams to ensure accurate and timely recording of payroll and benefits transactions in Oracle

  • Partner with Finance, Systems, and Technology teams on system enhancements, integrations, and automation initiatives; serve as a collaborative thought partner to stakeholders throughout the organization to support business objectives and provide financial guidance

Process Excellence
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives and identify automation opportunities to enhance efficiency and strengthen internal controls within the accounting function

  • Establish, document, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in accordance with GAAP and organizational standards

Team Leadership
  • Lead, coach, and develop a geographically distributed accounting team with a people‑first mindset; drive strategic hiring, clear goal setting, proactive performance management, and ongoing professional development to build a high‑performing team across multiple locations

  • Cultivate a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning within the accounting team

Additional Responsibilities
  • Lead special projects and ad hoc initiatives as needed to support organizational goals and strategic priorities

Key Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting required

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive, broad‑based accounting and finance experience, with at least 3 years in a management role; experience in a complex, multi‑entity organization strongly preferred

  • In‑depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

  • Strong systems experience required, including large enterprise financial systems and business intelligence tools; hands‑on experience with Oracle products preferred; demonstrated ability to partner with technology teams on system enhancements, integrations, and process automation

  • Excel champion (If Statements, Macros, Pivots, Vlookup)

  • High attention to detail

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver timely, accurate results under tight deadlines in a fast‑paced environment

  • People‑first leadership mindset with strong emotional intelligence; genuine team player who thrives on collaboration, clear communication, and building trust across all levels of the organization

  • Proactive, intellectually curious, and energized by process improvement; approaches challenges with a continuous improvement mindset and a bias toward action

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the technology, software, services, or entertainment industry a plus
