Job summary

PNR RailWorks is seeking a Directional Drill Operator to support our field operations. The role requires operating directional drilling equipment, conducting pre-trip inspections, and complying with safety protocols on active job sites.

You will coordinate with foremen, supervisors, and teammates to ensure efficient, safe drilling and utility placement. Candidates should have an AZ license and 3+ years in directional drilling, with knowledge of underground utilities and construction drawings.

Qualifications

  • AZ License with clean Driving Abstract.
  • 3+ years of directional drilling experience.
  • Knowledge of underground utilities and locates.
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction drawings.
  • Good communication and teamwork.
  • Experience with Ditch Witch JD10 horizontal bore machines.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre-trip and safety inspections and document results.
  • Operate directional drill and related construction equipment safely.
  • Follow site policies and regulations.
  • Work with minimal supervision while maintaining team communication.
  • Load/unload equipment and transport tools and materials.
  • Prepare drill fluid as site conditions dictate.
  • Operate drilling equipment and locators as required.
  • Assist others to meet company objectives.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Foreman or Supervisor or designate, the Directional Drill operator performs a variety of tasks related to the operation of directional drill and construction equipment.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Conduct pre-trip/walk around safety inspections and complete necessary safety paperwork and documentation.
  • Ability to operate all equipment functions independently and safely
  • Adhering to specific policies and regulations
  • Adhering to site specific rules and regulations
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Maintain excellent communication between members of the team and clients
  • Working as a member of the team by assisting other members when required.
  • Load and unload the directional drill equipment in a manner that is secure and damage free
  • Transport associated tools, materials, and/or equipment
  • Prepare the drill fluid based on site conditions prior to bore shot commencing
  • In conjunction with locator, operate the direction drilling using the selected bore heads and back reamers to place ducts.
  • Troubleshoot any equipment issues and relay to service technician for assistance and/or resolution
  • Able to operate drill or locator as required.
  • All other duties assigned to meet Company objectives.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • AZ License, with clean Driving Abstract, required.
  • 3+ Years of Directional Drilling Experience, preferred.
  • Previous knowledge of Underground Utilities and Locates
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction drawings
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced high change environment while managing multiple interruptions and adjustments of priorities throughout the day.
  • Experience with Ditch Witch JD10 Horizonal Bore Machines, preferred
  • Good Communication skills with ability to work in a team environment
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Standing and walking around the project site
  • Ability to life 50lbs (23kg)
  • Frequent bending, lifting, digging, shoveling and moving of objects on site.
  • Loud noise
  • Field environment and subject to all weather conditions.
  • Working in and around live commuter trains, high voltage, confined space, safety sensitive cabling
  • Day, evening, night and weekend shift work
