Function: Public Affairs and Corporate Communications

Job Summary:

Candidate will work across the organization and with external stakeholders to develop and advance the Company’s policy priorities in Canada and support the broader Public Affairs function. The candidate will leverage experience working with and understanding policymaking processes to design and lead strategic public affairs programs across all three levels of government, working closely with government officials, industry associations, community groups and local stakeholders.

Candidate will proactively monitor the Canadian policy and regulatory landscape across a broad range of areas including climate, trade, agriculture, clean energy and transportation, and identify and communicate any potential impacts. Candidate will also support Public Affairs team on broader global developments outside of North America.

Candidate will draft a variety of policy documents including policy papers, submissions to government consultations and internal briefing notes. Working closely with the Public Affairs team in Washington DC, the candidate also will contribute materials for board meetings, strategic planning, internal newsletters, and presentations. Candidate will also make internal and external presentations on these issues.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Work with government policy makers, associations and other stakeholders to advance the Company’s policy priorities in areas including climate and clean energy, transportation, trade and agriculture.
  • Working with cross-functional internal teams, lead the Company’s engagement in government consultation processes, including written submissions, policy papers, engagement sessions and one-on-one meetings.
  • Collaborate with management teams at Medicine Hat, AB and Courtright, ON facilities to develop targeted environmental, transportation and other regulatory and stakeholder strategies to support facility operations.
  • Monitor Canada’s policy landscape to identify emerging trends, risk and opportunities for the Company’s Canadian operations, and provide timely updates to internal teams.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with appropriate Canadian federal and provincial policymakers and local officials.
  • Represent the Company on relevant committees of Fertilizer Canada and other associations or ad hoc industry groups; provide strategic and tactical input on the associations’ activities.
  • Contribute to Company’s yearly strategic planning efforts, board presentations, investor materials, internal newsletters and weekly CEO reports.
  • Maintain current and compliant lobbyist registrations in relevant jurisdictions and ensure Company’s advocacy activities comply with government and internal policies.

Position Reports to: VP, Public Affairs (Washington DC)

Incumbent Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, business, environmental studies or related field; Master’s degree in related field highly desirable.
  • A minimum 10-15 years of progressively responsible experience in government relations, public policy development, stakeholder relations, and/or government.
  • In-depth knowledge of key Canadian policy issues affecting manufacturing, energy, transportation and agriculture, including federal and provincial climate policies.
  • Good understanding of indigenous consultation requirements and best practices.
  • Well-developed analytical skills, as well as the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Self-starter with strong organizational and planning skills who can work independently and collaborate remotely with team members across the Company.
  • Position is fully remote and is based in Ontario or Alberta.
  • Business travel is required.

Position Scope/Contribution:

Breadth of Scope: Scope may be enterprise wide across all functional areas or work teams. Performs broad coordination and direction across groups managed. Impact is broad and significant across the enterprise.

Communications and Interpersonal Skills: Regularly communicates both in writing and verbally. Communicates with broadest range of contacts throughout the Company. Information exchanged requires advanced knowledge in multiple areas.

Complexity: Problems solved involve highly technical and complex matters. May encounter challenges not previously dealt with that require creative and innovative solutions. Solutions typically involve collaborating with other functional leaders. Advanced logical reasoning, critical thinking and breadth of perspective are typically used.

Strategic Influence: Regularly considers and provides input on short- and long-term strategies. Likely to collaborate with other colleagues outside of areas directly managed. Decisions made may impact the business both short- and long-term.
