Job summary

Native Men’s Residence in Toronto is seeking a part-time Dietitian (0.5 FTE) to join Auduzhe Mino Nesewinong, a Native-led Indigenous primary health care site. The role provides culturally safe, trauma-informed nutrition care for FNIM adults and children in a trusted setting.

The Dietitian will assess nutrition, educate, and support diabetes care while coordinating with an interdisciplinary team and Indigenous service partners, with documentation in EMR and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

  • Registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario and active membership in Canadian and Ontario Dietetic Associations.
  • Successful completion of the CDRE exam.
  • Undergraduate degree in dietetics, nutrition, or food and nutritional science.
  • Liability protection/malpractice insurance coverage.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • 2‑5 years of clinical counselling and community nutrition experience in primary care.
  • Commitment to best practices, ongoing learning and client-centered care.
  • Experience with barriers to accessing traditional health care due to poverty, discrimination, etc.
  • Understanding of social determinants of health and power dynamics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Computer proficiency and familiarity with EMR systems.
  • Experience engaging Indigenous communities; trauma-informed approach.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing workloads.

Responsibilities

Background

Auduzhe Mino Nesewinong (Place of Healthy Breathing) is an Indigenous‑led primary health care initiative that has supported First Nations, Inuit and Métis (FNIM) community members for more than 5 years. Grounded in Indigenous values, self‑determination, and relationship‑based care, Auduzhe was established to address systemic barriers experienced by FNIM peoples. Through trusted community partnerships and outreach‑based service delivery, Auduzhe has grown into an interdisciplinary primary health care model that provides culturally safe, trauma‑informed, and wholistic care across the continuum, including health promotion, disease prevention, mental health and wellness, and primary care services. Embedded within Na‑Me‑Res (Native Men’s Residence), Auduzhe also supports Indigenous men residing at the shelter by delivering culturally safe, trauma‑informed primary health care and mental wellness services in a familiar and trusted setting. Auduzhe’s approach prioritizes community‑identified needs, continuity of care, and coordination with Indigenous and allied service providers, while advancing Indigenous ways of knowing and being within primary health care settings.

Main Function

The Dietitian position is intended to support the team at Auduzhe Mino Nesewinong in creating a welcoming and culturally safe space for Indigenous clients. The Dietitian will provide wholistic and comprehensive care for adults and children attending the Auduzhe Mino Nesewinong Indigenous Interdisciplinary Primary Care Team site.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Evaluate nutritional status of individuals and aid in the prevention and/or treatment of inadequate nutrition
  • Develop educational materials for various audiences
  • Plan, conduct and evaluate health education sessions on different topics
  • Provide assessment and counselling for clients living with pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes, taking into consideration client’s level of knowledge, readiness to change, medical and non-medical factors and socio-demographic background
  • Develop a health improvement plan in partnership with the client by integrating information about health status, clinical practice guidelines, and available community resources
  • Ensure complete, accurate, and timely documentation using electronic medical records
  • Works in collaboration with other team members and Indigenous and allied service organizations as required to ensure a smooth transition between care sites and that clients’ needs are met
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Auduzhe Mino Nesewinong leadership
  • Maintains and develops competence through appropriate continuing education
Qualifications
  • Registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario and maintains current membership in the Canadian and Ontario Dietetic Associations
  • Successful completion of the Canadian Dietetic Registration Exam (CDRE)
  • Undergraduate degree in dietetics, nutrition, or food and nutritional science from a recognized university
  • Evidence of liability protection/malpractice insurance
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certificate
  • A minimum of 2‑5 years of clinical counselling and community nutrition experience in a variety of primary care settings, one of which must be community health
  • Demonstrated commitment to best practices, ongoing learning, and client centered care
  • Experience working with communities and individuals who face barriers accessing traditional health care institutions due to poverty, discrimination, mental health and substance use issues
  • An understanding of and critical analysis of the determinants of health and social factors, such as power dynamics that affect individual, organizational and community health
  • Excellent written communication and oral skills that meet the needs of the individual and/or community at the appropriate literacy level
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and the ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and interdependently in an interdisciplinary team environment in which the skills and responsibilities of each team member are recognized and respected
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various computer software applications
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience engaging in and working with Indigenous communities
  • Experience with trauma‑informed care; ability to communicate with clients in a culturally safe, professional and empathetic manner
  • Flexibility to adapt to a dynamic and changing situation, and workload
