Job description

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll be joining CIBC’s Cyber Operations (CO) team as a Detection Engineer. As a Detection Engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing, building, and supporting threat detection content designed to alert the Security Operations team to Cyber Threats within the CIBC environment. You’ll leverage the MITRE ATT&CK framework and cyber kill-chain knowledge to build detections that will help to disrupt threat actors from achieving their goals. You’ll also work closely with other groups, such as Threat Hunting, Cyber Risk Management, DLP, SOC, Vulnerability Management, the Red Team, and Incident Response to ensure that important context is captured in order to enrich not just the detections you’ll build, but the others’ processes and outcomes as well. You and the team will work together using Agile principles, 2 week sprints, and a scrum development framework.

**Prior to starting in this role, security checks, including a criminal record check must be successfully completed to the satisfaction of CIBC. An annual criminal record check may also be required.

How You’ll Succeed
  • Build Great Detections– Leverage your understanding of different threat surfaces, kill-chain, MITRE ATT&CK and more to move beyond 1:1 alerting, and create truly well-crafted correlated detections that target specific threat activities.
  • Understand Your Attack and Threat Surfaces – You’ll need to leverage your knowledge of Endpoint, Network, Cloud, Application, Proxy Active Directory and more.
  • Call Out Problems and Roadblocks – There will always be impediments and blockers to success, but we need to shine a light on them in order to properly identify and plan to overcome them. Better still, present options for overcoming the roadblock when calling it out, and the path(s) forward once it is resolved.
  • Work Collaboratively, Both Within Your Team, and Without – Effective communication, collaboration, information sharing and teamwork are essential to success in this space. No one has all the answers, but more often than not, the answers can be found close at hand, either simply by asking the right questions, or putting the right heads together to solve for the problem at hand.
Who You Are
  • You understand that success is in the details. You notice things that others don’t. Your critical thinking skills help to inform your decision making.
  • You give meaning to data. You enjoy investigating complexproblems andmaking sense of information. You communicate detailed information in a meaningful way.
  • You’re digitally savvy. You seek out innovative solutions and embrace evolving technologies. You can easily adapt to new tools and trends.
  • You have a degree/diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. You have at least five years of experience as an Information Security Consultant or a similar role.
  • You’re a certified professional. It’s an asset if you have your CISSP, CRISC, or CISM designation.
  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work and you live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.
