Job summary

Parkland County is seeking a Deputy Fire Chief, Training to lead firefighter training programs across the Fire Services department. You will ensure training standards, support program development and provide guidance to reports while contributing to safe emergency operations.

The role requires strong leadership, 5–7 years of relevant experience and NFPA certifications. The position is primarily in-person at Parkland County Fire Station with a potential for one remote day per week.

Job Posting: #26-75 Status: Permanent, Full-time Posting Closes: September 25, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Schedule: 35 hours/week (7 hours/day)

Working within Fire Services and reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief, Training is responsible for the administration and oversight of the firefighter training programs across Parkland County. This position ensures training program standards are maintained, supports program development and provides recommendations to strengthen department training delivery. The Deputy Fire Chief, Training participates in a rotating Chief-on-call schedule and provides guidance to indirect reports, fostering a collaborative and respectful environment. This position is also responsible for providing leadership during emergency response, demonstrating sound decision making and a commitment to public and department safety.

Ideal Candidate
  • High School Diploma with some post-secondary coursework in Fire Services Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Professional development or certifications related to adult education, safety codes, and/or wildland fire management and behaviour is considered an asset.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience and comprehensive knowledge of National Fire Protection Association standards as they relate to firefighter training and safety.
  • Professional and self-motivated with excellent coordination, work scheduling, and time management skills.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with experience providing mentorship and guidance in leading both small and large teams, fostering a collaborative, respectful and safety focused environment.
  • Strong proficiency in the use of computers and other office technologies, and have competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Fire RMS Systems, as well as Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
  • The following Minimum and Preferred Certifications:

  • NFPA Standard 1001 – Firefighter, Level 2
  • NFPA Standard 1031 – Fire Inspector
  • NFPA Standard 1002 – Apparatus Operator
  • NFPA Standard 1033 – Fire Investigator
  • NFPA Standard 1021 – Fire Officer, Level 1 & 2
  • Safety Codes Officer Fire Group B Level 2
  • NFPA Standard 1041 – Instructor, Level 2
  • Safety Codes Officer Fire Group C Level 2
  • Standard First Aid Level C and CPR
  • Safety Codes Officer Fire Group E
Requirements
  • Ability to primarily work in-person at Parkland County Fire Station, 11350 274 St. Acheson, AB T7X 5A3.
  • A valid class 3 with Q endorsement driver’s license and current, satisfactory commercial driver’s abstract provided upon hire.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check, with vulnerable sector check is required upon hire, excluding candidates under the age of 18 and current Parkland County employees.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

A Starting Salary of: $121,700 to $136,900 per year Max Salary Potential: $153,900 per year
