Job summary

The County of Northern Lights in Manning, Alberta, invites applications for a County Fire Chief. You will lead rural fire operations, oversee two stations, manage training, prevention and response, and report to the CAO and Council.

Ideal candidates will have NFPA 1051, WUI training, advanced first aid, ICS 300, and a Class 3 license, with proven administration experience and strong stakeholder engagement. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires travel across the county and building

Qualifications

  • NFPA 1051 Wildland Firefighter Level 1 is required.
  • Alberta Wildland Urban Interface Training or equivalent.
  • Advanced First aid, CPR Level C (EMR or PCP Preferred).
  • ICS 300 is required.
  • Class 3 Operators License with Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Previous experience in Fire Department Administration and increasing responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Manning and Weberville Fire Stations and provide oversight, training, coordination and high-level service to residents.
  • Advise Council and CAO on emergency services, budgeting, and management of two volunteer fire services.
  • Assist with emergency planning, training and readiness as Deputy Director of Emergency Management.
  • Travel within the County and some days at either station; strong public relations with area residents and mutual aid partners.

Job description

The County of Northern Lights is seeking a County Fire Chief who’s ready to embrace a true northern challenge — someone who thrives in wide-open country, understands the realities of rural fire operations, and is energized by leading a service that protects resilient, close-knit communities. This role is ideal for a leader who enjoys northern living, values hands‑on operational engagement, and is motivated to strengthen and modernize a rural fire service with both vision and practicality.

Located in Manning, Alberta, this new position will oversee the Manning and Weberville Fire Stations, providing oversight, training, coordination and a high level of service to the residents of the County of Northern Lights and the Town of Manning.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Fire Chief will be responsible for advising the Council and CAO on matters relating to emergency services, budgeting, management of two volunteer fire services, training, prevention and response. This position will require significant travel within the County with some days working out of either stations in the County.

This position will require excellent organizational skills, good public relations skills and a willingness to work with area residents, mutual aid partners and stakeholders.

As a Deputy Director of Emergency Management, this position will assist the County with emergency planning, training and readiness.

Minimum qualifications are as follows:

  • NFPA 1051 Wildland Firefighter Level 1
  • Alberta Wildland Urban Interface Training or equivalent
  • Advanced First aid, CPR Level C (EMR or PCP Preferred)
  • ICS 300
  • Class 3 Operators License with Air Brake Endorsement
  • Previous experience in Fire Department Administration and a demonstrated increasing level of responsibility in Fire Services.
