Assistant Professor at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral Biological and Medical

Anticipated Start Date: Summer of 2025
Starting salary is $150,000.00 and may be negotiated based on experience and credentials.
The University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Dentistry is recruiting outstanding
candidates for tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral
Biological and Medical Sciences (OBMS) supported through the UBC President’s Academic
Excellence Initiative. Through this position, the Faculty of Dentistry seeks to consolidate its
position as the leader in Oral Health Research in Canada by aligning with Canada’s National Oral
Health Research Strategy (NORHS, DOI: 10.1177/00220345241299360).
The Faculty is seeking exceptional scholars to lead its research efforts in oral and systemic
microbiome and their interactions with the host. The applicant must hold a PhD and postdoctoral
training in a relevant field and solid understanding of oral microbiomes. Expertise in the field of
cariology is an asset. Evidence of skills in AI is a benefit. A DMD/DDS degree or dental hygiene
degree is highly desirable, but not required. The successful candidate will be an emerging leader
who can develop an independent research program and strengthen existing research and teaching
excellence and also meet the goals of the Canadian National Oral Health Research Strategy.
Following this strategy, candidates should employ advanced methodology for application in oral
health research, including microbiological omics methods, including genomics, transcriptomics,
proteomics, and metabolomics. Furthermore, the successful candidate would be able to join or
collaborate closely with members of the existing research themes at the Faculty of Dentistry,
including Craniofacial Development and Preclinical Disease Models and Matrix Biology,
Infection, Immunity, and Biomaterials Research. Several research groups in endodontics,
periodontics, biomaterials and craniofacial development are currently investigating biofilms and
their interactions with the host.
The candidate will supervise the research of trainees at all levels including undergraduate, graduate
and post-doctoral. The applicant should have a strong record of independent, consistent and recent
research productivity (first author or senior author) in the past three years in established journals.
Evidence of previous grant or salary awards will be favourably considered. The candidate will
have strong interpersonal skills and will build trust through an open, respectful and collegial
approach and be an eager collaborator who can work in a highly interactive and productive manner
with faculty, staff and students across the Department, Faculty and the University. The successful
candidate will support the Faculty’s mandate to educate oral health professionals by teaching of
foundational and oral microbiology to DMD, dental hygiene and graduate students. Therefore, the
applicant must show teaching experience and potential in microbiology.
The successful candidate will hold a full-time faculty appointment at UBC with salary, rank and
appointment status commensurate with qualifications and experience. UBC hires on the basis of
merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community. We especially
welcome applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons
with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientations. Canadian citizens and permanent
residents of Canada are given priority. Review of applications will begin July 1st and will continue
until the position is filled.
Send application with curriculum vitae, evidence of research and teaching experience, along with
contact information for three referees (referees will be contacted only at a later stage of the search
and the candidate will be informed prior to contacting them) to:
