Dentist - Nanaimo Correctional Centre

Correctional Health Services
BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services

1-2 days per month.

Are you an accomplished Dentist eager to provide services to a vulnerable and often overlooked clientele? Correctional Health Services, part of BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services, a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), has recently incorporated dentistry into its care services. Correctional Health Services provides dedicated health care services to clients within British Columbia's ten provincial correctional centres.

As a Dentist at Nanaimo Correctional Centre, you will provide quality dental care to clients who may be in significant need. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team comprising physicians, nurses, mental health and substance use specialists, pharmacists, and other professionals committed to comprehensive health care.

What you'll do
  1. Examine, diagnose, and treat clients.
  2. Maintain and review individual clients' dental records and x-rays; record assessments, diagnoses, and treatments in PAC.
  3. Prescribe medications for dental conditions as needed.
  4. Make arrangements, requests, or referrals to dental specialists regarding examinations, diagnoses, or treatments.
  5. Coordinate services with outside facilities when necessary.
  6. Provide after-hours telephone consultation services and attend to dental emergencies outside regular hours as required.
  7. Obtain approval from the Medical Director before undertaking non-essential dental procedures such as bridges, gold fillings, extensive oral surgeries, braces, crowns, dentures, orthodontics, prosthetics, repairs, root canal therapy, or external services.
  8. Consult in case management with PHSA.
  9. Participate in conference calls or in-service sessions.
  10. Advise PHSA and the Medical Director on dental service provision.
  11. Assist in drafting or amending procedures and standards for dental services.
  12. Ensure adequate medical and dental supplies are maintained.
  13. Provide opinions and cost estimates for dental procedures and prosthetics.
What you bring
  1. Degree in Dentistry from an accredited institution.
  2. Certification or eligibility for certification with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
  3. Active license in good standing with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia.

A Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) may be provided to accompany you on-site.
