Job description

Dentist – Nanaimo Correctional Centre

Correctional Health Services, part of BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services, a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), provides healthcare services to clients within British Columbia’s ten provincial correctional centres. We are seeking a Dentist to join our team at Nanaimo Correctional Centre, offering 1-2 days per month.

As a Dentist, you will deliver quality dental care to clients in need, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, mental health and substance use specialists, pharmacists, and other professionals committed to comprehensive healthcare.

Responsibilities
  1. Examine, diagnose, and treat clients.
  2. Maintain and review dental records and x-rays; document assessments, diagnoses, and treatments in PAC.
  3. Prescribe medications for dental conditions as needed.
  4. Refer clients to dental specialists when necessary.
  5. Coordinate with outside facilities for examinations or treatments beyond center capabilities.
  6. Provide after-hours consultation and attend to dental emergencies as required.
  7. Obtain approval from the Medical Director for non-essential procedures such as bridges, crowns, and elective surgeries.
  8. Participate in case management discussions and in-service sessions.
  9. Advise PHSA and Medical Director on dental service provision and standards.
  10. Ensure adequate dental supplies are maintained.
  11. Provide cost estimates for dental procedures and repairs.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Dentistry from an accredited institution.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
  • Active license with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia.

A Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) may accompany you on-site.
