The Dental Hygienist work under occasional supervision; promotes dental health by completing dental prophylaxis; assist Dentist in the delivery of services; chart conditions of decay and disease; codes and submit dental billing; assist in supervising dental assistant and dental students; performs related and other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions (Duties And Responsibilities)

• Performs measures designed to preserve dental health; Completes dental prophylaxis by removing calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth by scaling accumulation of tarter from teeth and beneath margins of gums. Use rotating brush, rubber cup, and cleaning compounds. Applies medicaments to aid in arresting dental decay. assist dentist in oral exam; detects disease by completing oral screening and radiographic studies; feel and visually examine gums; arrest dental decay by applying fluorides and other cavity-preventing agents; makes impressions for study cast; places and removes rubber dams, matrices and temporary restorations; helps dentist manage dental and medical emergencies by maintain CPR certification.
• Prepares patient for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, soothing, seating and draping patient; provides information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests; maintains instruments for dental hygiene treatment by sharpening, sterilizing and selecting instruments; select materials and equipment for dental hygiene visit by evaluating patient’s oral health.
• Educate patients by giving oral hygiene and plaque control instructions and postoperative instructions; make appointments and provide reminders of next dental hygiene visit.
• Document dental hygiene services by recording dental history; chart procedures performed in patient records; code and submit dental billing.
• Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations; protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; Cleans and sterilizes equipment and instruments. Ensures operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; troubleshoot malfunctions; call for repairs; maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipate needed supplies and place orders for supplies; verify receipt of supplies.
• Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; review professional publications. Assist with supervision and training of Dental Assistant and dental students. Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
