The University of Waterloo invites applications, nominations, and expressions of interest for the position of Dean, Faculty of Mathematics, with the appointment to be effective July 1, 2025.

One of the largest faculties at the University of Waterloo, the Faculty ranks among the world’s leaders for research and academic offerings, including applied technological and lab-based work, as well as fundamental and theoretical explorations. It comprises the Departments of Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, and the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science. These disciplines encompass mathematics of business and finance, education in mathematics and computing, and interdisciplinary topics. The faculty is supported by units such as the Centre for Education in Mathematics & Computing and the Math Undergraduate Group, along with research institutes focused on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, privacy, risk management, and quantum computing.
The Dean, as a University Officer, will make independent judgments on university matters and represent the Faculty’s policies and perspectives. Responsibilities include overseeing over 9,000 students, more than 230 professors, and 75 teaching staff, teaching over 500 courses, and managing 190 staff members. The Dean should exemplify academic excellence in teaching, research, service, and collaboration, fostering a culture of experimentation and excellence among faculty and students. The role requires sound administrative leadership, a passion for advancing the discipline, and the ability to build relationships with department chairs, faculty, students, alumni, and external partners. The Dean will have the opportunity to amplify the impact of Waterloo’s renowned faculty in mathematics, statistics, and computer science.
