Job description

A powerhouse of discovery and innovation, the University of Waterloo invites applications, nominations, and expressions of interest for the position of Dean, Faculty of Mathematics, with the appointment to be effective July 1, 2025.

One of the largest faculties at the University of Waterloo, the Faculty of Mathematics ranks among the world’s leaders in research and academic offerings, from applied technological and lab-based work to fundamental and theoretical explorations. The Faculty includes the following departments:

  • Applied Mathematics
  • Pure Mathematics
  • Statistics and Actuarial Science
  • David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science

These disciplines encompass business and finance mathematics, education in mathematics and computing, and interdisciplinary topics. They are supported by units such as the Centre for Education in Mathematics & Computing and the Math Undergraduate Group, along with research institutes in areas including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, privacy, risk management, and quantum computing. The Math Strategic Framework ensures ongoing engagement and review.

The Dean, as a University Officer, will make independent judgments on university matters and represent the Faculty’s policies and perspectives. Responsibilities include overseeing over 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students, more than 230 faculty members, and 75 teaching professors, teaching over 500 courses, and managing 190 staff. The ideal candidate will be an eminent scholar with a record of administrative leadership, a passion for advancing the discipline, and a collegial approach to building relationships with faculty, students, alumni, and partners.
