Job summary

Canadian Hearing Services (CHS) is seeking a Deafblind Intervenor to serve clients in the Peterborough/Durham area. The role involves providing communication support and sighted guiding to individuals with combined hearing and vision loss, enabling access to information and environmental interaction.

This permanent, full-time position runs Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with local travel to client sites and occasional out-of-town trips.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or equivalent in Deafblind services or related field.
  • Three to five years’ experience with deafblind individuals preferred.
  • ASL training is an asset; bilingualism is highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Act as communicator and sighted guide for individuals with combined hearing and sight loss.
  • Facilitate interaction with environment and information access.
  • Assist with daily tasks, transport, and accompany clients to appointments.
  • Provide support regarding assistive devices and communication methods.

Job Description

Canadian Hearing Services (CHS) has an opening for an Intervenor role servicing the Peterborough/Durham area. Reporting to the Manager, Deafblind Intervening Services, the Intervenor will act as a communicator and sighted guide for individuals with a combined loss of hearing and sight to provide access to information and facilitate interaction with their environment and surroundings. Additional responsibilities will involve assisting with daily tasks, transporting and accompanying clients to and from assignments and/or appointments, and providing support regarding assistive devices, etc.

This is a permanent, full-time unionized position, working Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

This position represents an existing vacancy and has been newly created to support the expansion of Deafblind Intervening Services.

The ideal candidate would have a Diploma in Deafblind services or equivalent, e.g. studies in humanities or community (e.g. Social Work, Gerontology) , and/or three to five years’ experience working with individuals who are deafblind. Formal training in ASL would be an asset. Bilingualism (French/English) as well as LSQ training and alternative communication skills such as Two Hand Manual, Braille would be preferred. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required for frequent local (as well as occasional out of town) travel with clients.
