Job Description:
As a Database Infrastructure Manager within Data Management Services (DMS), you will support the Database Infrastructure Director with People Management and Technical leadership. You will join an existing Infrastructure team consisting of talent employees of different experience levels.
The role may require occasional participation in supporting Employees with after-hours and weekend leadership of projects, infrastructure activities, as well as various disaster recovery exercises as may be required.
What will you do:
People Management
- Manage a team of 4-6 direct reports with the possibility of team growth over time.
- Participate in end-to-end recruitment; create/modify job descriptions, review resumes, participate in interviews, decision making, onboarding and training.
- Meet with employees 1:1’s throughout the year [monthly or needed].
- Assist employees in creating and managing yearly Performance goals.
- Participate in annual [two per year] performance review cycle and provide feedback.
- Manage/encourage team invest in professional growth.
- Guide employees with career development growth, promotions and progressions.
- Promote training, cross training and upskilling and find work opportunities to use new skills.
- Support work life balance and health wellness.
- Participate in the review/refinement/creation of core competencies and skill levels required for the various DBA infrastructure technical skills.
- Foster a culture of diversity, equity and inclusivity, by helping to remove silos and move the entire team towards a One Team, One Vision mindset.
- Encourage employee to take initiative, have a creative mindset, recommend and participate in new ideas, solutions and processes.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical leadership and direction for Infrastructure teams; MSSQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, AWS RDS, Optim and Imperva SecureSphere.
- Technical Decision-Making designing of new patterns of deployment, cost optimization, security and compliance, evaluating new tools to improve DMS’ service to their clients.
- Mentoring team members in defining and documenting best practices for the global deployments of SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Optim and Imperva.
- Stay current to support employees of various emerging technologies, cloud technologies, DevOps tools and processes, and vendor applications.
- Cross-Team collaboration working across ops, security, architecture, cloud and business teams for various project initiatives.
- Create, design and mentor others on technical slide decks for communication to technical audiences, live demos or visual walkthroughs.
What do you need to succeed?
- 3+ years of People Management experience.
- 3+ years of experience recruiting, onboarding and completing performance reviews
- 5+ years of administrative support of MS SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Optim and Imperva SecureSphere
- Experience and support with AWS core services (EC2, S3, IAM, VPC, AWS RDS) and database workload
- Working experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) CloudFormation and/or Terraform
- Provide employees with guidance on large and complex projects in a variety of projects through the entire project lifecycle
- Coach team to express difficult technical concepts to a variety of audiences (executive, technical and business) both written and verbally
- Organize and monitor personal workload and escalate to Director as issues arise
- Work closely with team members, technical/team leads, management, to ensure consistent delivery and quality of database services

As a condition of the role, the successful candidate must obtain a Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance through Sun Life in advance of the start date
Must be able to satisfactorily complete applicable background checks prior to the start date and during employment, in accordance with Sun Life’s policies and practices
The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
