Job Responsibilities:

The Asset Management Department is looking for a data scientist who uses analytical, statistical, and programming skills to discover the information hidden in various data sources and assist in leveraging this information within the corporation. Your primary focus will be in applying data mining techniques, performing statistical analysis, building prediction/modeling systems and developing visualization solutions for the Asset Management Department.

Data Science And Analytics

  • Analyze and interpret data sets in order to support data-driven decisions.
  • Develop asset related data models, visualizations, and algorithms to interpret data to support Asset Management planning and recommends tools and approaches to conduct data exploration, decision, descriptive and predictive analytical models.
  • Develop tools to facilitate the development of asset data models such as deterioration curves and whole life costing models.
  • Mine and analyze data from various data sources and databases to find patterns and improve asset management planning strategies.
  • Create Asset Management related predictive models that inform key business decisions and optimize Asset Management planning, executing model development from design through to deployment.
  • Act as subject matter expert on cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize actionable high-impact insights across a variety of service areas.
  • Recommend creative and innovative methods to solve data problems through the use of advanced computing platforms and tools.
  • Lead applied analytics initiatives that are leveraged across services to determine the insights required to support asset-related decisions that include data and dataset requirements, platforms and methodology in order to capture data appropriately.
  • Provide prescriptive and predictive analytics and solutions to address asset-related service trends and impacts, complex service issues and/or identifies new opportunities and provides recommendations as a direct result of findings.
  • Prepare regular and ad-hoc reports on findings to cross-functional groups and management.

Visualization And Reporting

  • Conceptualize methods to present data through infographics, charts, graphs, maps, videos, and interactive visualizations and data visualization techniques.
  • Communicate actionable insights using data, often for a non-technical audience including developing presentations with complex content to management and staff.
  • Work closely with service department to define, design and deliver effective data visualizations.
  • Collaborate with IS to develop user interfaces for analytics tools/applications to ensure an exceptional user experience.
  • Organize the visual presentation of data by applying visual design and data analysis techniques to ensure the data is clear, insightful, and actionable for users.
  • Design, develop, and produce interactive maps and graphics of structured content and data to be hosted on a website.
  • Collaborate with project staff to optimize navigation, layout, user interface, and user experience of interactive graphics and dynamic content.
  • Coordinate a repository of reusable data visualization templates and views including researching and acquiring appropriate datasets.
  • Ensure accuracy of results from data analysis, document processes and product deliverables.
  • Prepare outcome reports and recommendations for actionable items, additional exploration of datasets or new insights.
  • Draft processes and procedures relative to data analytics business activities.

Data Management Quality Assurance And Due Diligence

  • Develop and conduct pilot projects to review and evaluate technology and data to ensure quality and consistency in results and product output.
  • Identify opportunities to increase data quality including automation and data entry procedures.
  • Ensure that source data is accurate and datasets are valid, correct and applicable within all asset management systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to proactively create consistent business rules, deploy analytics and manage actionable items and decisions.
  • Research best practices, emerging methodologies and science related to data mining, machine learning, and big data.
  • Collaborate with other business units to document and maintain business data management procedures and specifications.

Communication And Training

  • Educate the organization on advanced analytics approaches and techniques such as testing hypotheses and predictive modeling to assist the organization in understanding the principles and the underlying logic behind the process.
  • Develop clear and comprehensive presentations of analytics results that emphasize actionable recommendations and insights to support the development of new strategies and tactics.
  • Work with the IS data team to ensure best practices are followed and data is properly documented.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring across the commission on the subject of analytics, data science, and visualization.
  • Develop and deliver customized training on analytics platform to enable self-serve capabilities.
  • Respond to project specific inquiries and resolves concerns as required.
  • Participate on committees, work groups, task forces and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Management, Data Science/Management or a similar analytical discipline.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in data management/science, including database design and report writing.
  • Other post-secondary education may be considered in combination with extensive (8+ years) related work experience.
  • Experience performing in-depth data analysis and visualization ideally in the areas of life cycle and risk analytics in an asset intensive environment.
  • Experience leveraging artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, databases, traditional statistics and graphics tools to identify relationships, correlations, trends and patterns found within structured and unstructured data sets.
  • Experience in documenting processes and procedures in a format that can be easily understood.
  • Experience leading projects and/or working with project teams.
  • Proficiency in Data Discovery and Visualization tools like ArcGIS, QlikSense, or Microsoft Power B as well as statistical packages such as SPSS and STATA.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as SQL, Javascript, R, Phython, GO, etc.
  • Strong computer skills including familiarity with applications such as SharePoint, SQL, Crystal Reports, Visio, and/or ERP systems (i.e. JDE).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g. Excel, Power Point, and Word) at an advanced level including the design and maintenance of databases, spreadsheets and applicable software programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation and report writing skills.
  • Advanced skills in structural equation modeling, generating decision trees, cluster analysis, text analytics and data visualization.
  • Working knowledge of data warehouse technical concepts and architecture.
  • Knowledge and experience writing complex SQL statements.
  • Ability to define business problems to be solved and employ sophisticated statistical methods to generate insights based on data from multiple disparate sources.
