Job summary

Canada Life is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to join the Canada Data Team. You will design scalable data platform solutions in a cloud environment, mentor engineers, and help shape long-term strategy while supporting on-call needs.

You will partner with product owners and developers across Toronto offices, translating business needs into reliable data services, with a focus on security, performance, and governance in a modern Azure/AWS ecosystem.

Qualifications

  • University/College education in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years building production data systems or platform components.
  • Strong Python coding skills.
  • Solid understanding of engineering and infrastructure best practices and ML lifecycle orientation.
  • Experience with Azure ML, AWS SageMaker, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, GitLab.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build scalable data platform solutions in a cloud environment.
  • Partner with internal customers to understand pain points and craft platform solutions.
  • Support DevOps services, platform monitoring, and deployment support for data pipelines.
  • Enable connectivity for models and data sources.
  • Provide appropriate resource access permissions for use cases.

Are you a Data Engineer professional with focus on platform administration and support and strong Leadership and Communication skills looking for a challenging and rewarding opportunity? Canada Data Team is looking for a Data Platform Engineer to join our team.

The Data Platform Engineer is responsible for providing data platform and tool solutions to support business needs at Canada Life. Leveraging your cloud and Microsoft Azure technical subject matter expertise, you will have the exciting opportunity to design, adapt, and maintain data platform solutions within a cloud environment. You will navigate and reconcile considerations for immediate and future platform needs, encompassing but not limited to scalability, maintainability, performance, accuracy, reliability, security, compliance, cost, and robustness, even in situations where the requirements may be unclear or evolving. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally with Product Owners as well as developers, quality assurance, governance & support experts in Toronto and other offices. In this role, you will be part of an on-call rotation in order to service our customers.

What you will do
  • Design and build highly scalable data platform solutions within a cloud environment.
  • Partner with our internal customers to understand their development pain points and craft platform solutions to address them.
  • Support the effort to build and enhance DevOps services, including platform monitoring, platform, and deployment support for the respective pipelines for data delivery.
  • Connectivity enablement for relevant models and their data sources.
  • Deliver appropriate Resource Access Permissions for respective use cases.
  • Provide technical mentorship to data platform engineers and interns on the team.
  • Help shape the long-term strategy and grow the team.
What you will bring
  • A University or College education in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of experience building production data systems or platform components.
  • Strong coding skills in Python
  • Strong understanding of engineering and infrastructure best practices, general software development principles with a machine learning software development life-cycle orientation
  • Strong experience on Azure Machine Learning and AWS SageMaker, Azure Data Factory, Databricks administration and GitLab.
  • Experience managing the entire machine learning lifecycle.
  • Desirable experience on Azure Cognitive Services and AWS Rekognition.
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to motivate.
  • Customer focus and strong relationship management skills
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities and working within ambiguous situations.
  • Effective time management, prioritization, and decision-making skills

The base salary for this position is between $80,700 - $95,700 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc). If you are selected to move forward in our recruitment process, your recruiter will be able to discuss additional details of our total rewards program with you.
