Job summary

YMCA of Northeastern Ontario is seeking enthusiastic Early Learning Assistants to support children’s development through play-based learning in the Before and After School Program in North Bay. This part-time role requires heart, creativity, and professionalism, with responsibilities spanning supervision, programming, and health and safety oversight.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years working with children and/or youth.
  • Current Standard First Aid with Infant and Child CPR (Level C).
  • Knowledge of Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Certification in YMCA Playing to Learn and Healthy Child Development is an asset.
  • Health Assessment from Medical Professional and Immunizations Record.
  • Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (dated within 6 months).

Responsibilities

  • Provide attentive, compassionate supervision to ensure each child’s health, safety, and well-being.
  • Keep attendance records and conduct regular head counts.
  • Plan and deliver engaging educational programming using YMCA curricula (Playing to Learn; A Place to Connect; Zen-er-gy; Healthy Childhood Development).
  • Track children’s development through documentation and open communication with families and community partners.
  • Follow YMCA policies and the Child Care & Early Years Act (CCEYA) and guidance from Public Health, Fire Department, and other agencies.

At the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario, we’re looking for enthusiastic Early Learning Assistants who bring heart, creativity, and professionalism to their work every day. As an Early Learning Assistant, you’ll be a key part of a dynamic team that supports children’s development through play-based learning, meaningful relationships, and a commitment to health and safety. These Part-Time positions within the Association are at various locations for the Before and After School Program throughout the City of North Bay.

START DATE: September 28, 2026

LOCATION: North Bay, ON

RATE OF PAY: $21.96/ Hourly

*This position includes the Ministry of Education Wage Enhancement Grant (WEG) of up to an additional $2.00/hour for qualifying roles within a licensed child care program at the YMCA

HOURS: 0-29 Hour / Weekly

What You'll Bring to the Role
  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of two (2) years working with children and/or youth
  • Current Standard First Aid with Infant and Child CPR (Level C) *Recognized by the WSIB
  • Knowledge of Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Certification in YMCA Playing to Learn and Healthy Child Development is an asset
  • Health Assessment from Medical Professional and Immunizations Record
  • Current and satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (dated within the last 6 months)
What You'll Be Doing
Child Supervision & Programming
  • Provide attentive, compassionate supervision to ensure each child’s health, safety, and well-being
  • Keep accurate attendance records and conduct regular head counts - always know your numbers!
  • Plan and deliver engaging educational programming using YMCA curricula:
    • YMCA Playing to Learn, A Place to Connect, Zen-er-gy, and Healthy Childhood Development
  • Track children’s development through documentation and open communication with families and community partners
  • Follow YMCA policies and the Child Care & Early Years Act (CCEYA), along with guidelines from Public Health, Fire Department, and other agencies
Environmental Safety & Maintenance
  • Conduct daily safety scans of indoor and outdoor spaces before and after programming
  • Ensure all areas are clean, organized, and safe for children and staff
  • Sanitize toys, equipment, and furnishings according to YMCA and Public Health standards
  • Adapt the physical environment to meet the needs of all children, prioritizing safety and inclusion
  • Uphold legal responsibilities under the Child & Family Services Act, including the Duty to Report
Administrative Duties & Professional Development
  • Record live attendance and ensure it matches the number of children in your care
  • Attend monthly team meetings and participate in ongoing professional development
  • Collaborate with your supervisor on goal setting and performance reviews
  • Complete required documentation for incidents, health and safety, and child development
  • Use Weemarkable to share daily updates with families
  • Safely store confidential records and data
  • Support the team with other duties as assigned
