The role involves:

  • Classifying products and items under Canadian and American customs tariffs by:
    • Retrieving technical information and drawings from various sources
    • Requesting information from vendors or internal sources
    • Searching publicly available customs rulings
    • Validating relevant Notes and Explanatory notes
  • Determining the correct Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) and Canadian Export Classification List (ECL) item number, if applicable
  • Reviewing waybills, invoices, origin certifications, and supporting documents for compliance
  • Responding to customs broker inquiries regarding country of origin and HS/HTS coding
  • Obtaining and verifying customs paperwork
  • Assisting brokers with processing entries to meet compliance standards
  • Contributing to process improvements within the department
How to thrive in this role?
  • Mastery of French and English languages
  • Strong knowledge of office software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams)
  • Experience with SAP or other ERP systems (preferred)
  • Aerospace and mechanical knowledge (assets)
  • Post-secondary education (preferred)
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience
  • CCS (Customs Certified Specialist) designation and/or Customs Broker License
  • Extensive knowledge of customs regulations and document requirements
  • Understanding of Incoterms, rules of origin, and free trade agreements
  • Basic understanding of customs valuation methods and codes
  • Knowledge of Export Control classification (Canada and US) (preferred)
  • Deep understanding of the Harmonised System classification
  • Knowledge of PGA/OGD requirements and customs clearance processes
