Job summary

MacDonald Steel Limited is seeking a Custom Industrial Painter to prepare and maintain paint coatings and spray booth equipment. You will ensure proper adhesion of coatings designed for rugged forestry environments, and you will work on surfaces of custom-machined parts.

Location is Cambridge, ON with dedicated day and afternoon shifts; a $3.00 per hour shift premium applies to afternoons. Join a family-oriented team offering competitive wages and healthcare benefits.

Qualifications

  • Exposure to apprenticeship programs, classroom instruction or industrial painting experience an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Use spray equipment to apply paint and other materials.
  • Clean and prep surfaces by sanding, scraping and grinding.
  • Remove grease, dirt, paint, or rust before painting using abrasives or solvents.
  • Read and review paint specifications, mix primer and paint per mil specs.
  • Pour paint into spray guns and adjust nozzles for proper flow.
  • Monitor flaws and correct causes; sand between coats for adhesion.
  • Disassemble and clean sprayers and power equipment; dispose of waste properly.
  • Maintain paint booth and equipment; follow Health & Safety procedures.

Job description

Custom Industrial Painteryou are responsible for the preparation and maintenance of paint coating and spray booth equipment and systems as well as for the cleaning, sanding, priming, and painting of custom machined-part surfaces. The Industrial Painter will ensure the proper adhesion of both paint and coatings that are designed to stand up to the rugged and challenging terrain of the forestry industry.

Location: 200 Avenue Road, Cambridge, ON

Dedicated Day Shift: 6:00am - 2:30pm, Monday - Friday

Dedicated Afternoon Shift: 2:30pm - 1:00am, Monday - Thursday

Shift Premium: $3.00 per hour for afternoons

Job Duties
  • Use of spray equipment to apply paint and other materials
  • Clean and prep surfaces using processes such as sanding, scraping and grinding
  • Remove grease, dirt, paint, or rust in preparation for paint application, using abrasives, solvents, or sandblasters
  • Responsible for reading and reviewing the electronic paint specifications, apply primer, mix paint to the correct ratio as per paint specifications as well as apply paint based on the exact mil specifications required by our customers
  • Pour paint into spray guns and adjust nozzles and paint mixes for proper paint flow and coating thickness
  • Monitor and identify flaws, such as blisters or streaks, and correct their causes
  • Sand surfaces between coats of paint or primer to remove flaws and enhance adhesion for subsequent coats
  • Disassemble, clean, and reassemble sprayers and power equipment, using solvents, wire brushes, and cloths for cleaning duties
  • Ensure all paint related waste is properly labeled, stored and disposed of
  • Maintain paint booth and associated equipment to ensure proper working condition
  • Ensure all Health and Safety procedures are followed
  • Safely operate overhead cranes to move material to and from paint booths
Skills and Experience
  • Adapt to a changing work environment, competing demands, and able to deal with frequent changes, delays, or other unexpected events
  • Attention to detail to ensure precision in painting applications
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve effectively and efficiently
  • Physical requirements include standing for long periods of time, lifting up to 50 pounds, and bending
  • Understanding of different coatings and their properties
  • Familiarity with spray guns, sanders, and other industrial painting tools
