As a faith- and values-based organization, we hire and serve people of all backgrounds and walks of life - there is a place for everyone to belong here.Mission StatementThe Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.Job Description:Position Purpose Summary:The Custodian position provides required sanitation, cleaning, and custodial service to custodial standards ensuring that the building environment is healthy and comfortable.Accountabilities:Cleans, sanitizes, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes, vacuums, polishes, and waxes floorsCleans windows, mirrors, woodwork, furniture, equipment, and other surfacesCleans washroom facilities and shower roomsCleans offices, classrooms, and other roomsSupplies toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other hygiene itemsEmpties trash bins and disposes of trash in the garbage compactor or garbage binsCleans, sterilizes and/or disinfects areas and /or equipmentSpot cleans carpets and performs general carpet cleaning, as requiredPerforms more extensive cleaning, carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, and light maintenance during non-peak programming periodsOrganizes and maintains janitorial supplies in janitorial room(s) and on janitorial cartsFollows established procedures and documentation for inventory trackingInforms Custodial Supervisor of general repairs and maintenance items requiredLifts and moves furniture as requestedWorks independently or cooperatively with team members to complete tasks on schedule and according to quality standardsAttends mandatory training and specialized work training when scheduledPerforms laundry service as required by program/department needs.Complies with all prescribed sanitation and building disinfecting protocols.Attends meetings as requested by Director of Facilities or Custodial SupervisorPerforms other related duties as assigned.WORKING CONDITIONS:This is a temporary, full-time position at 40 hours per week until December 31, 2026.Work is done at a men’s residential shelter, indoors and outdoors.Exposed to weather as work is done indoors and outdoors in all seasons.The work environment is typically in the entire facility and property designatedMoving furniture, pushing, and pulling, as well as lifting items up to 50 lbs.Handles garbage and cleans up human waste and biohazardous substances.Exposure to odors, toxic chemicals, electrical hazards and infectious diseases.May deal with aggressive people and may experience verbal, and less likely, physical attacksRisk of needle pricks, back injuries, and repetitive strain injuries.Education and Experience Qualifications:Education, Qualifications and Certifications:Completion of High School or EquivalentPolice Information Check with Vulnerable Sector SearchChild Intervention Check if working in the vicinity of children.Experience and Skilled Knowledge RequirementsAt least three months of prior related experience, including life skills and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance proceduresSkills and Capabilities:Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and valuesAbility to work independently with minimal supervisionStrong interpersonal skillsAbility to operate industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skillsAbility to use cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and cleaning compoundsModerate to high attention when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals, and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipmentKnowledge of standard cleaning proceduresBackground in handling, mixing and safely using cleaning chemicalsA strong sense of initiative and responsibility in working aloneGeneral knowledge of workplace safety practices, policies, and procedures (e.g., equipment safety, hazard communication, personal protective equipment use) to ensure performance of safe work practices.Required to lift more than 20 lbsCompensation:The target hiring range for this position is $17.45 to $21.81 with a maximum of $26.17.Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.The Salvation Army will provide reasonable accommodation upon request.
