Job summary

The Alex Community Health Centre in Calgary is seeking a Custodian to perform cleaning and general building maintenance, reporting to the Facilities Manager. This 1.0 FTE, permanent full‑time role emphasizes safety, preventive maintenance, and serving a community‑focused health centre.

  • WHMIS training is required; ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical labor.
  • First Aid/CPR within 30 days of hire; certification must be valid for at least 6 months.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and a child welfare check are required.

Salary Range: $46,215.00 To $48,516.00 Annually

What We Do

Since 1973, The Alex has been a community‑based, non‑for‑profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing‑focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low‑barrier access, trauma‑informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person‑centered care.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Custodian is a hands‑on role that performs regular cleaning duties and is responsible for performing general building and property maintenance according to safety, predictive, and preventative maintenance systems and processes.

This is a permanent, full‑time position.

What You Will Do

What You Bring
  • Organized, pro‑active and reliable.
  • Knowledge of custodial practices, machinery, and related equipment is an asset.
  • WHMIS Training is required; ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical labor.
  • A desire to work with marginalized populations.
  • Strong understanding of occupational health & safety as it pertains to facility management.
  • Knowledge of services, equipment, and/or supply ordering and inventory control.
  • Capability of multi‑tasking in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Proficient working independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal rapport‑building skills; experience fostering a cooperative work environment.
  • First Aid (Basic or Intermediate) – Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and a child welfare intervention check are required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.
Work Environment and Hours
  • The Alex Community Health Centre: 2840 – 2 Ave SE, Calgary, AB).
  • 1.0 FTE (37.5 hrs/week).
  • Standard hours are 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
  • May involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Continuous periods of standing and walking, with occasional periods of sitting.
  • Occasional physical action requires the ability to climb ladders, bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel/crawl, stand for long periods of time, and lifting, carrying, and manipulating objects (up to 50 Ibs) throughout the shift.
  • Occasional time outside in all weather conditions.
  • Driving as part of work‑related duties may be required.
