Job summary

City of Barrie is seeking a part-time Culture Events Assistant to support the special events permitting process and daily operations of the Recreation and Culture Services Department. You will liaise with event organizers on-site, manage inquiries, and help ensure permits comply with conditions.

This non-union role requires a two-year college diploma and availability for evenings, weekends, or holidays, with wage between $26.04 and $35.33 per hour.

Job Type: Casual Part-time, up to 4 Months, Non-Union

Salary Range: $26.04 to $35.33 per hour

The Opportunity

Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.

Under the general guidance and direction of the Manager of Recreation and Culture Services, the Culture Events Assistant (PT) provides support to the special events permitting process and the day-to-day operations of the Recreation and Culture Department. Specifically, this position provides assistance to the Community Events Coordinator, and support with various administrative, event permitting, communications, and general tasks associated with special events. Furthermore, this position meets with event organizers on site in advance of and after events are held, to assess the state of City-owned assets and to ensure that organizers are operating events according to the event permit conditions. Additionally, this position receives, responds to, or redirects inquiries, questions, or complaints by phone, email, and in person, from internal and external contacts regarding special events and the event permitting process. Overall, this position plays an integral role in supporting special events and the Recreation and Culture Services Department and enabling the delivery of comprehensive event programming and permitting services.

Education

Two (2) year College Diploma in Marketing, Event Management, Tourism Management, Recreation and Leisure Services, Public Relations, or related discipline

Other Important Information

Location: 56 Mulcaster Street, Barrie, Ontario

Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand

Wage: This is a casual part-time non-union position with the following 2026 pay range:

  • Hourly Pay Rate: $26.04 to $35.33
