*This is a term position, between April – October. Hours may vary depending on the operational needs.*

Summary:

Our team is looking for energetic and motivated members to join us for the upcoming season (May – October 2022). This job is perfect for someone looking for seasonal employment who loves working outside in a variety of weather conditions, and passionate about culture.

In service since 1999, Takaya Tours is the premier First Nation owned eco-tourism venture in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada.

At the core of the business are guided interpretive paddles in our replica 40-foot ocean-going canoes. Guests gently paddle in the protected waters of the Burrard Inlet and beautiful Indian Arm while guides sing songs, tell legends, and point out ancient village sites. The tours have been specifically designed for people of all ages and fitness levels.

  • Greet guests, answer questions, and provide assistance as required.
  • Provide friendly and efficient customer service
  • Willing to learn songs and legends and be able to share their teachings
  • Ensure the safe storage, maintenance of equipment
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintain equipment (canoes and kayaks) to ensure that all equipment is in good and safe working condition for programs.
  • Follow safe work procedures to ensure the safety of all participants, staff and self.
  • Ensure that all participants and staff are wearing PFDs while on the water, always.
  • Lead by example.
  • Maintain a productive and healthy working environment for staff.
  • Deal with staff and any problems in a positive, diplomatic, and professional manner at all times.
  • Be personable and helpful when dealing with clients and staff.
  • Keep proper files and other relevant documentation of day-to-day operations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of Indigenous history and culture, preferably TWN.
  • Effective communication skills, attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Punctual, reliable, positive attitude and able to work cohesively with a team.
  • Paddling experience
  • Paddling certifications an asset
  • High school or Post-Secondary education in tourism, business, or related field or a combination of experience and education is an asset
  • Proficient with computers and knowledge of accounting an asset.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization is preferred.
  • Must successfully pass a Criminal Records Check
  • First aid training an asset

Responsibilities:

  • Be an excellent host to guests

  • Present appropriate knowledge/stories and songs
  • Clean and properly store equipment
  • Ensure TWN Policy & Procedures are always adhered to.
  • Ensure positive communication among staff and community members and/or families served.
  • Reports to Takaya Tours Manager

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands; lift heavy objects, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.

Mental Demands:

  • This role requires the ability to manage several requests and situations at one time. Stress may be caused by tight deadlines or conditions, the variety of tasks and the volume of the workload at certain times of the year.

  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to loud.
