In this role, you will work closely with prosecutors and justice system partners, communicating clearly, professionally and effectively with defence counsel, Provincial Court Officials, police officers, Victim Services personnel, victims and other stakeholders. The Crown Counsel Assistant plays a key role in ensuring criminal files are complete and ready for prosecution. This may include police reports, witness and victim statements, medical records, police notes, search warrants, surveillance footage, and other evidentiary materials.

Accurate documentation of disclosure requests, responses received, and instances where requested materials are unavailable or do not exist is required.

To succeed in this role, you will have a strong understanding of criminal law, legal terminology, the Criminal Code of Canada, and the Youth Criminal Justice Act. You will be able to assess whether investigative files contain the evidence required to support criminal charges and demonstrate knowledge of both mandatory and discretionary court orders available under the Criminal Code.

You will also be responsible for interpreting and applying Public Prosecutions policies in a fast-paced working environment, including policies relating to information management, disclosure, and privacy. A sound understanding of legislative obligations, including the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights Act, the Victims of Crime Act, and other legislation and case law that is required.
