Job summary

Fort McKay First Nation's Elsie Fabian School seeks a dedicated educator to lead Cree language and culture instruction. You will develop lesson plans, deliver engaging classes, assess student progress, and collaborate with staff to integrate Cree across the curriculum.

Preference for Indigenous ancestry; the role emphasizes community language revitalization, cultural resources, and partnership with families to nurture student learning in a Northern Indigenous community.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Alberta teaching certificate required.
• Extensive knowledge of Cree language instruction; fluency in Cree written and oral.
• Experience teaching in First Nations communities preferred.
• Strong classroom management and engagement skills.
• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Criminal record check with vulnerable sector clear.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the School Principal and under the overall direction of the Education Authority, the incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing lesson plans, delivering engaging and interactive classes, and assessing student progress.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Coordinate language and culture programing and curriculum development within Fort McKay School and teach Cree language and culture in accordance with the school schedule
• Develop a Cree Language Program that promotes best practices in learning, assessment and instruction
• Work with staff to promote Cree language integration in all classes and in all subjects
• Bring Cree knowledge base of cultural competency in the design and development of resources
• Assist in developing and conveying a positive image of Cree Language and culture to the school and community
• Provide student assessment and reports in accordance with the school calendar
• Work both autonomously and in teams on diverse language projects
• In collaboration with the Language and Culture Teachers, assist with cultural events
• Continuously provide inquiry and reflect on teaching best practices
• Review of current literature on best practices in Cree Language and Culture
• Attend in-services and workshops as approved by the Director of Education
• Other duties shall be assigned as required

KEY REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education
• Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate
• Extensive Knowledge of Cree Language instruction
• Fluency in Cree language both written and oral
• Respect and understanding for Fort McKay traditions, values, and culture
• Enthusiasm, flexibility, dedication and commitment to community language and culture revitalization
• Previous teaching experience and strong classroom management skills
• Extensive knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
• Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is a definite asset
• Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
• Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required
