Job description

About Shred Capital

Shred is a Vancouver-based financing and professional services firm with a dynamic and growing consultancy practice. The team helps Canadian companies fund their innovation by recovering millions each year through SR&ED, provincial R&D tax credits, and non-dilutive government funding programs.

Our clients range from early-stage startups to established SMEs across the widest range of industries.

Our work sits at the intersection of tax technical depth, financial rigour, and genuine client partnership. Through our non-tax advisory practice, we sit meaningfully in the operations of our clients and lean on our wide range of industry partners and collaborators to help solve strategic and financial problems with our clients.

The SR&ED program has just entered its most generous era in a decade; the federal expenditure limit has been substantially expanded, capital expenditures are back in scope, and eligibility has widened. Demand is climbing, so we're growing the team to meet it.

We are an advisory firm. We are not licensed practitioners and collaborate with external accounting firms for all clients on all tax matters.

The Role

When you join our team, you will own the financial side of SR&ED and R&D tax credit claims in our portfolio of clients, collaborating with the Partners and growing your own book of business from day 1.

This is not a back-office processing seat. You will work directly with clients, partner with our technical writers and our tax delivery lead, and be trusted to run files with all of the autonomy you can handle. If you are tired of being a cog in a Big Four assembly line, this is the place where your judgment matters.

What You Will Do, Technical
  • Prepare and review SR&ED claims (Form T661) and provincial credit claims (BC IDMTC, OITC, and others) - labour, materials, subcontractor, and overhead costing.
  • Build and reconcile claim cost models from client payroll, GL, and time-tracking data.
  • Coordinate with clients' external accountants to integrate SR&ED credits into corporate tax returns (T2).
  • Lead CRA review and audit defense by preparing submissions, responding to queries, and representing the financial and operational positions.
  • Translate messy client financials into clean, audit-ready claims.
  • Advise clients directly on documentation practices, eligibility boundaries, and how to maximize claims without overreaching.
  • Manage multiple client files and deadlines simultaneously (18-month filing windows wait for no one).
  • Prepare presentations to the Credit Committee for our lending programme.
What You Will Do, Entrepreneurial
  • Help us grow a high-margin business that has been doubling in revenue year-over-year.
  • Sit with the partners as we work out growth strategies and account management best practices.
  • Integrate with our Capital and Capacity teams as we expand into other provinces and new verticals.
  • Represent the company at industry events and conference talks.
What You Bring
Must haves:
  • CPA designation (CPA, CA / CPA, CGA / CPA, CMA).
  • 2+ years preparing or reviewing SR&ED / R&D tax credit claims.
  • Strong corporate tax (T2) foundation.
  • Fluency in Excel and the ability to build clean cost models from imperfect source data.
  • Sharp attention to detail and genuine ownership over deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication. You can explain a costing decision to a client and defend it to the CRA.
  • Curiosity to explore new technologies and develop workflows and processes.
Nice to haves:
  • Experience with provincial credits (BC IDMTC especially) and other non-dilutive funding programs (IRAP, CMF).
  • Exposure to startups, gaming/interactive, manufacturing, or life sciences clients.
  • Familiarity with the Government of Canada R&D funding programs under NSERC, Heritage Canada and others.
  • Comfort in a modern tooling stack (Monday.com, Google Workspace).
Why Shred
  • Real ownership. You run files, not fragments of them. Direct client relationships from day one.
  • A program on the upswing. SR&ED is expanding and this is a growth seat, not a maintenance one.
  • Specialist depth. Work alongside people who do this all day and do it well. You'll get sharper, fast.
  • Hybrid, Vancouver-based. Flexible arrangement, no daily commute mandate.
  • Compensation that reflects the specialty, plus performance bonus tied to delivery.
  • Amazing co-workers. We really are.
Compensation

Competitive base commensurate with experience, plus a performance bonus. We pay for SR&ED expertise specifically, not generic accounting tenure. We will also pay for all professional dues and ongoing maintenance costs to maintain designation.

Shred Capital is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates.
