The Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Justice is seeking a Court Worker to assist people in conflict with the law in Yellowknife and nearby communities. You will provide information and guidance to ensure fair access to legal processes.

Reporting to the Court Worker Supervisor of the Legal Aid Commission, the role requires strong community relations, case management, and the ability to travel by vehicle or air to remote communities.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, criminal and civil procedure.
  • Ability to maintain good relations with community services.
  • Proven case management ability and ability to work independently.

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

The Court Worker is located In Yellowknife and reports to the Court Worker Supervisor of the Legal Aid Commission. The position is responsible for providing assistance and advice to people in conflict with the law or requiring assistance in matters relating to the law in Yellowknife and surrounding communities. Court workers directly impact the outcome of legal processes within the Northwest Territories.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, criminal and civil procedure, and policies related to the provision of legal services to individuals and communities;
  • Ability to maintain good relations with community services such as Band Councils, RCMP, Probation Services and Social Services;
  • Proven case management ability and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

The completion of a high school diploma and training/course work offered through various colleges in justice or criminology or through on the job training offered by the Legal Aid Commission, some post-secondary education in office administration and at least 3 years of experience working in a law office or similar office environment or a combination of the above.

The ability to speak an Aboriginal language of the Northwest Territories or French would be an asset.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

- valid Class 5 driver's license and must be prepared to travel by vehicle or by air to communities outside Yellowknife during all seasons.
