The N’Swakamok Indigenous Friendship Centre (NIFC) is seeking an Indigenous Courtworker for a full-time position in Ontario. The role focuses on advocacy and support for Indigenous people navigating the Canadian justice system, including facilitating access to legal representation and coordinating referrals.

Qualifications include a diploma or degree in justice or social services, strong interviewing and counselling skills, confidentiality, and the ability to travel as required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in the Justice, Social Services, or related field.
  • Knowledge of the structure and procedures of the Criminal Justice System.
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Code, Young Offenders Act and other relevant Acts.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must possess excellent interviewing and counselling skills.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, written and oral.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous language and culture an asset.
  • Computer literate- experience in using Microsoft Office.
  • Collecting statistical information for reporting purposes in a database.
  • Must be honest, empathetic, and respectful as these attributes are fundamental to being an effective Courtworker.
  • Ability to work within a team-oriented environment.
  • Work experience in client advocacy and client liaison with various service providers.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Drivers license, have access to a reliable vehicle and be willing to travel if required.
  • Superior ability to work within deadlines under minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work with mainstream justice personnel and authority figures in an appropriate manner so as not to cause detriment to the clientele served, the Courtworker program, N’Swakamok or its affiliates.
  • Must provide a Criminal Reference Check (CPIC) which includes screening for vulnerable position

The N’Swakamok Indigenous Friendship Centre (NIFC) is currently accepting resumes for the position of Indigenous Courtworker – Full-time (35hrs/week)


Job Purpose:


Provide advocacy to Indigenous people involved in the Canadian Justice System to better understand their rights, options and responsibilities when appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice. By ensuring Indigenous people have access to legal representation and making referrals and recommendations to individuals whom you work with. Every effort should be made to present these plans of action to courts for consideration.
