The Black enslaved worked alongside Indigenous panis slaves in Quebec, and in Nova Scotia, descendants of African American loyalists lived alongside members of the Mi’kmaw nation. There is also a longstanding relationship between African andIndigenous peoples in wider Americas, including in the Caribbean, the region where most people of African descent in Canada have roots. Today many Black Nova Scotians, including those living in Montreal, claim Mi’Kmaw ancestry, and in the 1960s, signifi cant efforts were made to forge an Indigenous-Black solidarity movement. As recent work on the subject shows, these efforts were disrupted by Canadian state security in collaboration with its U.S. counterpart. Today the issue of settler colonialism and who qualifi es as a settler has raised pointed questions about the place on non-Indigenous peoples on this territory, including people of African descent.Teaching Qualification Requirements:Education: Master’s Degree (PhD preferred) with specialization in relevant areasExperience: Teaching experience in related courseworkSchedule: Mondays, 03:35 pm-06:25 pm, January 5 2027 - April 14 2027.Location: FERR 105Before applying, please note that to work at McGill University, you must be both authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based / located.McGill University is an English-language university where most teaching and research activities are conducted in the English language, thereby requiring English communication both verbally and in writing.Hiring Unit:Faculty of Arts Institute for Indigenous Research and KnowledgesCourse Title:Black-Indigenous AlliancesSubject Code:INDG 400 001Location:FERR 105Schedule:M 03:35 pm-06:25 pmDeadline to Apply:2026-10-15McGill University hires on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community.
