McGill University seeks a qualified educator to teach EDSL 412: Assessment in TESL for Winter 2027. The role focuses on assessment information, data collection techniques, and interpretation for decision making in second language courses.

The instructor will coordinate with DISE and participate in planning meetings, delivering content in person within the Education Building. The candidate should have a Master’s in Second Language Education (or related), a TESL teaching degree, and ideally a PhD.

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching ESL in Quebec schools and familiarity with QEP.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team of instructors and coordinate course planning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert knowledge of course content as described in the eCalendar.
  • Apply assessment principles and methods for TESL in classroom settings.
  • Attend coordination and planning meetings at least 2 weeks before start date.
  • Familiarity with digital teaching tools and blended class delivery.

Hiring Unit: Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE)
Course code and title: EDSL 412.
Assessment in TESL.
Description:

This course deals with the role of assessment in TESL. Students will explore the kinds of information needed to make educational decisions in second language courses, different techniques for collecting that information, and ways for interpreting it. Principles and methods for assessment with and without tests are discussed and practiced. This course is not team taught or offered online.

Term: Winter 2027

Course Credits: 3

Location: Education Building (EDUC 539)

Schedule: Monday & Wednesday, 08:35 am-11:25 am

Appointment dates: December 21, 2026 - March 5 , 2027

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TRQs):
  • 1. Master’s degree in Second Language Education or related area (in exceptional circumstances applicants without a Master’s degree but with significant research or professional experience related to the course content may be considered).
  • 2. Teaching degree or equivalent in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
  • 3. PhD or equivalent in a relevant field is an asset
Experience:
  • 1. Expert knowledge of course content as represented in current eCalendar description, including: assessment principles and methods in Teaching English as a Second Language. formative and summative assessment practices
  • 2. Experience teaching ESL in the Quebec elementary/secondary French school system;
  • 3. Knowledge of the Quebec Education program (QEP) specific to ESL programs
  • 4. Familiarity with the 13 professional competencies specified by the Ministère de l’Éducation
  • 5. Previous successful experience teaching similar course(s) to pre-service teachers
Other:
  • 1. Commitment to working with a team of committed and engaged instructors
  • 2. Must be available to attend course coordination and planning meeting minimum of 2 weeks in advance of course start date
  • 3. Knowledge of the impact and proven record integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • 4. Familiarity using myCourses, ZOOM and other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences
  • 5. Familiarity teaching blended classes is an asset
  • 6. Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital teaching and learning tools
