Job summary

Co-operators is seeking a Counsel for Property & Casualty (P&C) Litigation in Canada. You will handle day-to-day file management across bodily injury and property claims, advising clients and staff, and supporting senior counsel on complex matters.

You will collaborate with claims colleagues, provide expert legal opinions, conduct examinations, mediations, and trials as required, and travel as needed. A law degree and Ontario licensure are required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of insurance defence or plaintiff personal injury experience.
  • Law degree (LLB, JD or comparable) and Ontario licensure to practice law.
  • Strong critical thinking and collaborative abilities.
  • Excellent drafting and communication skills, both technical and plain English.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, including senior management.
  • Negotiation skills with keen attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day claims litigation, from referral to resolution, for lower to moderate complexity matters.
  • Provide legal advice, training, and guidance to agents, insured clients, and staff of The Co-operators.
  • Support senior lawyers on higher-complexity files or projects as needed.
  • Travel as necessary for claims litigation work.
  • Identify issues requiring involvement of AVPs or VP, General Counsel, or other stakeholders.

As a Counsel, Property & Casualty (P&C) Litigation, you will be responsible for the day-to-day file handling of a variety of lower to moderate complexity bodily injury and property matters on behalf of The Co-operators group of companies (The Co-operators) or its insured clients. You will also provide general legal advice, training, guidance and direction to agents, insured clients, and staff of The Co-operators. Further, you will support the Associate Senior Counsel, Senior Counsel, AVPs and VP, General Counsel, P&C Litigation on higher complexity claims litigation files or projects, as necessary.

How You Will Create Impact
  • Commensurate with your experience, successfully handle all aspects of claims litigation from initial referral to resolution.
  • Work in collaboration with your Claims colleagues to successfully resolve claims litigation by providing assessments, opinions, legal research and attending examinations for discoveries, mediations, motions, appeals, pre-trials, and trials, as necessary.
  • Travel as needed for claims litigation files.
  • Assess situations and provide advice as required and/or determine the need for experts, as well as identify issues which need to be brought to the attention of, or require the involvement of the AVPs, or VP, General Counsel, P&C Litigation, or other stakeholders.
  • Provide general legal and other advice and guidance on a broad range of topics related to all facets of the business of The Co-operators Group Ltd (CGL) and its subsidiaries, with a particular focus on the core area of legal expertise.
  • Provide training and support to claims personnel as well as supporting the Associate Senior Counsel, Senior Counsel and AVPs on more complicated claims litigation.
  • Recommend improvements and changes in process to reduce financial and legal exposure.

To Join Our Team
  • You have a minimum of 3 years of insurance defence or plaintiff personal injury experience.
  • You have a Law Degree (LLB, JD or comparable).
  • You are a member of the body regulating lawyers in the province of Ontario.
  • You have a strong ability to think critically, to present information effectively and collaborate effectively.
  • You have excellent communication abilities (particularly drafting), both technical and plain English and can interact effectively with all levels of the organization, particularly senior management.
  • You have effective negotiation skills combined with a keen attention to detail.
  • You can read and understand case laws and statuses.
  • Trial and/or Arbitration/Hearing experience would be an asset;

Expected salary range $104,717 - $154,700+

The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Co-operators in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education.

Employees may also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn additional compensation tied to individual and/or business performance, or other business metrics.
