Position Summary
The Copper Cable Engineer/Technologist is responsible for translating customer drawings and specifications into manufacturable designs. This includes developing harness layouts, creating build documentation, selecting appropriate components, and ensuring manufacturability, quality, and cost-effectiveness. The role is critical in ensuring that harnesses meet functional and regulatory requirements while aligning with internal manufacturing capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret customer drawings, schematics, and specifications to develop harness designs and build instructions.
- Design wire harness assemblies using CAD tools
- Create detailed documentation including wiring diagrams, BOMs, pinout tables, and routing instructions.
- Select connectors, terminals, wires, tubing, and other components based on electrical and environmental requirements.
- Collaborate with purchasing to source and qualify components based on availability, cost, and lead time.
- Support prototype builds and work closely with the production team to ensure accurate and efficient assembly.
- Identify and resolve design-for-manufacturing (DFM) issues to reduce cost and improve throughput.
- Maintain engineering change documentation and version control of harness designs.
- Communicate with customers to clarify requirements and provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards such as IPC/WHMA-A-620, UL, CSA, or customer-specific quality standards.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or Engineering Technology
- 3+ years of experience in wire harness design and manufacturing, preferably in an OEM or contract manufacturing environment.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of wire harness components and construction practices.
- Proficient in CAD software for electrical design
- Familiarity with wire harness standards (IPC/WHMA-A-620, UL, CSA, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
- Experience with ERP systems and BOM management.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
