Job summary

The City of Thunder Bay is seeking a Coordinator Financial Reporting to support corporate financial accountability, funding compliance and strategic decision-making. You will coordinate financial reporting, performance measurement, and grant funding applications, working with departments across the Corporation to ensure strong financial stewardship.

You will act as a financial and accounting advisor, using SAP and other reporting software to guide appropriate standards and reporting practices.

Qualifications

  • Three years of accounting or related experience.
  • Experience in budgeting and financial reporting is preferred.
  • Public/municipal sector experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate financial reporting, funding initiatives, and related analyses.
  • Prepare financial reports, forecasts, and cash flows; liaise with auditors.
  • Manage a database of funding opportunities and external funding applications.
  • Serve as a primary contact with federal and provincial agencies for reporting.
  • Advise on accounting standards and use of SAP and other reporting tools.

Where You’ll Make a Difference Every Day

As a Coordinator Financial Reporting, you'll play a key role in supporting corporate financial accountability, funding compliance, and strategic decision-making. Working closely with departments across the organization, you'll help ensure accurate financial reporting, maximize external funding opportunities, and provide analysis that supports sound business and financial decisions. At the City, you’ll gain exposure to a variety of projects, helping you grow your expertise in a municipal setting. Coordinating financial reporting, performance measurement, and grant funding applications, you’ll gain a broad exposure to a variety of projects and apply your expertise while keeping your work interesting and impactful. You will collaborate with departments across the Corporation to prepare meaningful financial analyses in order to ensure strong financial stewardship. Your work will directly support employees and residents across Thunder Bay.

How You’ll Support and Shape Financial Services

In this role, you will coordinate financial reporting, support funding initiatives, and provide analysis and guidance to support corporate objectives. You will also have the following accountabilities:

  • Manage the financial, monitoring and reporting processes associated with funding applications, including coordination with staff across various departments, in order to complete accurate financial and statistical reporting as required by funding agencies and to ensure compliance with the terms of the funding agreements.
  • Initiate and prepare financial reports, analyses, benchmarking, forecasts, cash flows, and other studies; interface with auditors, and internal and external resources as required.
  • Manage a database of funding opportunities, applications and current status and reviews and coordinate applications for external funding opportunities in collaboration with multiple departments.
  • Responsible for acting as a primary contact and liaison with federal and provincial agencies for report submissions and to seek insights into funding programs.
  • Act as a financial and accounting advisor/resource and provides guidance and directions related to appropriate accounting standards and use of SAP and other financial reporting software.

What You’ll Bring to the Team

Here’s what will help you succeed as the Coordinator Financial Reporting:

  • Degree in business administration or commerce majoring in accounting together with three years’ accounting or related experience, preferably in the municipal or broader public sector; or
  • Diploma in business administration in accounting together with five years’ accounting or related experience, preferably in the municipal or broader public sector
  • Three years of previous budget preparation, financial reporting and resource management experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with applying and reporting for federal, provincial and non-government funding opportunities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other levels of government, private and public officials, direct reports, co-workers, and the general public
  • Strong project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills
