Job summary

The Manor at Gravenhurst in Gravenhurst, ON is seeking a Cook to join our Food Services team. You will prepare high-quality, nutritious meals according to the menu, ensuring resident food preferences are respected and meals are a positive experience for our residents.

You will supervise Dietary Aides, maintain kitchen cleanliness, and work within budgets while adhering to safety and regulatory standards. Experience in healthcare or hospitality is helpful; culinary credentials are highly valued.

Qualifications

  • Current certificate in food handling training from a local board of health or equivalent.
  • Culinary designation/diploma is an asset.
  • Experience in health care or hospitality setting is an asset.
  • Familiar with weights, measurements, recipe conversion and portion control.
  • Familiar with HACCP, WHMIS, OH&S and sanitation standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare high-quality, nutritious meals according to the menu and regulatory requirements.
  • Plate meals and respect residents’ food preferences.
  • Make meals a positive experience, not a task.
  • Keep kitchen area and equipment clean and organized.
  • Supervise and direct Dietary Aides during food prep and meal service.
  • Work within a set budget, minimize waste, and follow policies.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and assist with record-keeping.
  • Assist in FIFO processes and collaborate with Food Services and other departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Cook reports to the Culinary Services Manager and is expected to demonstrate commitment to resident safety by providing high-quality care in accordance with the organization's vision and mission.

Wage Rate

The starting wage rate is $18.15/hour.

Vacancy

This is an existing vacancy.

Responsibilities:

Preparation of high-quality, nutritious meals according to the menu plan and the requirements of the RHA,

Plates all meals and ensures Resident food preferences are respected,

Ensures that meals are an experience rather than a task,

Keeps the kitchen area and equipment clean,

Supervise and direct Dietary Aides during basic food preparation and meal service,

Work within a set budget, limit waste, and adhere to residence policies and procedures,

Maintains a safe working environment,

Maintain required records in the absence of the Food Service Manager, e.g., menu changes, purchase orders, delivery receipts, temperature checks,

Assists in the FIFO process of food and supply products,

Works collaboratively with all Food Services and other departments associates,

Any and all other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

Current certificate in food handling training from a local board of health or an agency of the board of health or has recently successfully completed an equivalent food handler training program, or training can be provided,

Culinary designation/diploma an asset or equivalent designation,

Previous employment in a health care/hospitality setting is an asset,

Familiar with weights and measurements, recipe conversion and portion control,

Familiar with Ontario Food Premises Regulation and Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating and therapeutic diets,

Familiar with Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety, and Sanitation Code,

Mentally and physically able to perform duties as assigned,

Organizational and time-management skills,

Individual and teamwork skills,

Demonstrated understanding of/empathy for the needs of seniors,

Must be free of communicable diseases,

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing,

Clear vulnerable sector screening (w/ in last 6 months), recent TB test results (w/ in last 6 months) or Chest X-ray (w/ in last 1 yr), and two supervisory references are required.
