Job summary

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) invites applications for a Cook I at Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, BC. You will prepare, portion and serve food for patients, residents, and staff following established menus and production requirements.

As a casual/on-call role in a unionized environment, flexibility and reliability are valued. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check and will receive orientation and safety training per policy.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized 12 month program in cooking or an equivalent combination or education, training and experience.
  • Food Safe Certificate Level 1.

Job description

The salary range for this position is CAD $29.24/Hr. - CAD $29.24/Hr.

Under the general supervision and direction of the Manager, Food Services or designate, the Cook I utilizes a variety of cooking methods such as frying, roasting, grilling, steaming, poaching, baking and boiling, prepares items by following established menus, recipes and production requirements for such food products and diet items such as soups, sauces, meats, fish, poultry, desserts. Prepares, portions and services food items for patients, residents, clients, cafeteria, and catering as required. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with safety standards/practices and health and safety requirements.

This is a CASUAL/ON-CALL posting. We are always recruiting to maintain a robust pool of casual staff. This is a unionized environment/position and all vacancies are posted internally for current employees to apply. Working more hours as a casual staff member will build your seniority hours; this will open more opportunities for you when applying for internal vacancies.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.

Education & Experience
  • Graduation from a recognized 12 month program in cooking or an equivalent combination or education, training and experience.
