Job summary

Ontario Public Service is seeking a Cook 2 for the Milton Campus (Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf and Trillium Demonstration School). This 1 temporary seasonal position runs from September to June, with weekday hours focusing on meal preparation for a large school cafeteria.

Responsibilities include preparing diverse foods, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, assisting with inventory and stock, and following menus and dietary guidelines. Prior ASL language development is welcomed.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in chef/cook training or related work experience.
  • Completed Food Handlers Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience in institutional cooking methods, large volume cooking.
  • Experience operating commercial/institutional food preparation equipment.
  • Knowledge of nutritional principles to assist in menu planning.

The Ministry of Education, Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch Milton Campus (Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf and Trillium Demonstration School) operates school/student lodging programs with the tradition and reputation for meeting the academic, personal, social, emotional and developmental needs of the individual children.


Do you have experience preparing a large quantity of hot foods using commercial cooking methods and equipment? Are you an experienced Cook seeking part time hours primarily during weekdays? If so, consider bringing your culinary expertise to this position where your primary role will be to prepare, cook and serve nutritious and appetizing meals.

What can I expect to do in this role?



  • Prepare a wide variety of foods through standard volume cooking methods, ensuring adherence to prescribed menus, works schedules and dietary charts.

  • Maintain cleanliness of food services area, equipment/utensils.

  • Assist in the receiving and stocking of food items.

  • Assist with inventory of supplies.

  • Perform other duties related to the operation of a large school cafeteria.


What you bring to the team

Knowledge and Experience:


  • You have thorough knowledge of food preparation, storage techniques/procedures and proper kitchen equipment operations, normally acquired through completion of a post‑secondary education in chef/cook training course or related work experience.

  • Completed Food Handlers Certificate or willingness to obtain.

  • You have demonstrated experience in institutional cooking methods and procedures, especially in large volume cooking.

  • You have experience operating commercial/institutional food preparation equipment.

  • You know nutritional principles to assist in planning menus.


Communication and Interpersonal Skills:


  • You have excellent communication skills including the ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to communicate in American Sign language (ASL) or willingness to learn;

  • You have the ability to work independently and as a team member.


Physical Work


  • You have the ability to work shifts and perform physical work.
